Activities

For the nature lover and adrenalin junkie there are many things to see and do within a one hour drive from Knysna ranging from forest and coastal hikes to mountain biking and bungee jumping. The Knysna lagoon offers safe swimming, boating and sailing with a variety of charter cruises available throughout the year.

Between August and November Plettenberg Bay, 32kms from Knysna, offers boat based whale watching opportunities where close encounters with Southern Right whales and dolphins are a common occurrence.

Knysna is famous for its indigenous Afro Montane forests and offers tourists an opportunity to get close to nature with many hiking trails in the area and a wide variety of animal life including the elusive Knysna forest elephants which are rarely seen. The Knysna Loerie is regularly heard in the forest. This shy and beautiful bird is found throughout the indigenous forests often seen as a flash of scarlet as it flies from tree to tree in search of fruit.

A 25km ride northeast of Knysna will take you to the Millwood Gold Fields where in the late 1800’s thousands of hopeful gold diggers were frantically panning and digging for their dream of riches. Today all that is left is a grave yard, a restored stamp mill and long forgotten mine shafts.

Tours can be arranged from Mother Hollies tea room and while you are there do stop to savour the amazing scones and pies!
