Situated in the malaria free, Greater Addo and Frontier Country area in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, this breathtaking reserve offers sightings of the Big 5 and numerous other species. The Bush Lodge is only a 45 minute drive east of Port Elizabeth. Discreetly built in the bush at the top end of an open valley in the reserve, each of the rooms overlooks a watering point with big sky views. All buildings have thatched roofs, tented walls and wooden floors. The guest reception is at Reed Valley Inn where guests are welcomed by our friendly staff. From there, guests are transported in an open Land Rover to the Bush Lodge. The land was used to ranch sheep and cattle up to the turn of the century. The challenge has been to re-establish the original flora and fauna species to the area and to return the land to nature. The Amakhala Conservation CentreThe Amakhala Conservation Centre is largely funded through bed levies from the commercial lodges and donations and has three main objectives: • to promote environmental awareness and impart knowledge of the environmental, economic and cultural importance of wildlife, wild areas and the functioning of natural ecosystems. • to identify and support research projects that provide ecological and social information relevant to the management of the reserve and to wildlife conservation in general. • to encourage and advise on various conservation projects which will ensure the conservation of biodiversity and functioning of ecological systems. Following on the successful re-introduction of 15 species onto Amakhala the conservation centre continues to investigate the reintroduction of other species like Cape vulture into the area. |

DIRECTIONS: From Port Elizabeth From Port Elizabeth take the N2 towards Grahamstown. Approximately 50 km from Port Elizabeth is an intersection, keep left on the N2 towards Grahamstown. From the intersection travel for a further 13km towards Amakhala Game Reserve (see road signs of various lodges along the way).
