Port
Elizabeth: There are several "one-stop" shopping centres. Greenacres
and the Bridge Shopping Centre in Cape Road, Newton Park, is Africa's largest shopping
centre under one roof. Several shops in the city specialise in African arts, crafts and
curios. They include Wezandla Gallery & Craft Centre in Baakens Street, African
Curios, 18 Main Street, the Wildlife Society Shop, Lawrence Street, and Momentos of Africa
Gift Shop at Port Elizabeth Airport. Port Elizabeth has artwalk which links all the art,
antique, interior decorating and speciality shops in Central. MOGO is situated at The
Boardwalk, and has a selection of fine South African Giftware as well as Mohair goods
grown in the Eastern Cape and produced in Port Elizabeth.
Flea markets are held at the following venues: St. George's Park (first Sunday of every
month) and Hobie Beach (every Saturday and Sunday).
East London: Oxford Street, together with its feeder streets, is the heart of the
CBD and the site of many shops, banks and building societies. Vincent Park Shopping
Complex encompasses 65 shops and 1 000 parking bays. Lock Street Gaol, formerly a prison
built in 1880, now houses a variety of shops, a flea market, arts and crafts stalls and a
restaurant. For a touch of the macabre, you can inspect the death cells and original
gallows, carefully restored. On the Old Transkei Road, the Floradale Craft Gallery is
worth a leisurely browse.
Popular flea markets are held at the following venues: Buxton Street and Gonubie Municipal
Complex (Saturday mornings), Latimers Landing (Saturdays and Sundays), Marine Park and Ann
Bryant Art Gallery (Sundays) |
