Perched on the southern slopes of the Klein River Mountains, Phillipskop Mountain Reserve offers expansive self-catering accommodation with panoramic views stretching across the Overberg, from Akkedisberg to Gansbaai. The reserve itself provides a wealth of exploration opportunities, including Phillipskop Cave, the region’s only recorded rock art site on the Cape Whale Coast.
Oxalis Chalet is a generous chalet-style cottage featuring three bedrooms: a master bedroom with a double bed and en suite bathroom, and two twin bedrooms sharing a second bathroom equipped with both a bath and a shower. All bedding and towels are supplied for your convenience.
The main living area is designed to be open and spacious, offering a dining area with an eight-seater table, a fully equipped kitchen with fridge-freezer, gas stove, microwave, and other essentials, as well as a comfortable sitting area with views up to Phillipskop.
A log-burning stove keeps the sitting area warm during cooler months, and solar-heated water with gas backup ensures a continuous hot water supply. Outside, a braai area is positioned on the mountain side of the cottage, while a large deck on the valley side provides an ideal spot to enjoy the scenery.
The reserve offers trails suitable for both gentle walks to the waterfall and more challenging hikes to the cave, rock stacks, or even the summit of Phillipskop. Vibrant wildflowers flourish throughout the area, and guided walks are available for those wishing to learn about the distinctive fynbos of this part of South Africa.
Phillipskop Cave is a significant heritage site, containing the only rock art along the Cape Whale Coast. Guests can also enjoy a natural swimming pool located near the cottage, which is chlorine-free and filtered through a planted pond system.
Phillipskop Mountain Reserve covers 246 hectares of fynbos-draped slopes within the Klein River Mountains, forming part of the globally celebrated Cape Floristic Region. The reserve hosts over 900 plant species alongside a rich diversity of birds and wildlife. Each chalet deck offers sweeping vistas across the Klein River valley, from Akkedisberg to Gansbaai, providing an immersive experience of this remarkable landscape.
