Daniel’s Kraal Farm lies approximately four hours from Cape Town along the renowned Route 62, celebrated as the longest wine route in the world linking the eastern and western regions of the country, and about two hours from the Garden Route. Positioned between the Rooiberg Mountains near Calitzdorp, the farm stretches across unspoilt expanses of succulent Karoo and fynbos, bordering Cape Nature Conservation land. Here, tranquillity prevails and understated luxury meets wide open space.

Self-Catering Accommodation

Designed with families in mind, the farmhouse comfortably accommodates eight adults and two children across five thoughtfully appointed bedrooms and three beautifully renovated bathrooms. The interiors reflect a refined country aesthetic, combining antique furnishings, curated artworks, fine bone china, silver accents, candelabra and Persian carpets to create an atmosphere of authentic old world elegance. At the heart of the home, a fully restored original AGA stove anchors the traditional kombuis and dining area, inviting guests to gather, cook and share memorable meals together.

Each bedroom offers comfort without excess, dressed in quality linens and mohair throws, and framed by picturesque views of the surrounding landscape. The wide veranda provides an inviting setting for outdoor entertaining or unhurried summer afternoons, cooled by overhead fans and accompanied by sweeping vistas.

Two bedrooms open directly onto the front veranda. On the left, a family suite comprises a spacious main bedroom with a double bed and its own outdoor veranda overlooking the herb garden, alongside an interleading children’s room furnished with two three quarter beds. These rooms share a bathroom fitted with a bath, shower and toilet.

To the right of the veranda, a separate bedroom features a queen size bed and an en suite bathroom with bath, shower and toilet. This room enjoys views across the valley, mountains and swimming pool, and includes a private outdoor tea garden for quiet moments.

Within the original section of the farmhouse, two additional bedrooms lead from the central communal lounge. One offers a queen size bed and the other a double bed. These rooms share the original bathroom, which retains its character and includes a bath with handheld shower and toilet. Waterkloof also boasts an outdoor bath and shower set within its own secluded tea garden, offering a distinctive Karoo experience beneath open skies.

During the cooler months, the AGA stove warms the entire home while hearty Karoo dishes simmer in the kitchen, bringing family and friends together around the table. Guests who prefer to relax completely may arrange in advance for meals to be prepared or for a curated hamper filled with local Klein Karoo produce to await their arrival.

The central voorkamer, or lounge, serves as a welcoming gathering space where guests may enjoy board games, watch television or settle into generous sofas with a good book.

Outdoor leisure is equally rewarding. Guests may cool off in the swimming pool, enjoy a game of badminton, croquet or boules on the green lawn, or stroll along the farm roads to appreciate the natural surroundings. Those seeking more activity can hike the surrounding hills or bring mountain bikes to explore the nearby passes and trails. Younger visitors delight in feeding the resident geese, a simple pleasure that never loses its charm.

As evening falls, the sky transforms into a brilliant display of stars. Spreading a blanket across the front lawn and watching this vast celestial spectacle is an experience not to be missed.

Location & Attractions

Calitzdorp is situated just eight kilometres from the farm, approximately a ten minute drive, and offers a range of attractions. Visitors can sample port and wine at respected local estates, browse beautifully crafted ceramics, or enjoy freshly brewed coffee and homemade pies at charming eateries scattered throughout the town.

Throughout the year, Calitzdorp hosts a variety of noteworthy events. In November and December families may partake in apricot and peach picking, while February brings grape harvest activities. May features the Red Stone Hills Mountain Bike and Trail Running event, followed by the Calitzdorp Expressed Cape Ruby Festival in June and Art on Track in August. September welcomes the internationally acclaimed Succulent Festival, showcasing more than 1 600 recorded species within this remarkable biodiversity hotspot.
