A 21 day tour taking in all of the major highlights of South Africa. We travel from Cape Town through the Garden Route to the Eastern Cape, then through the Free State to KwaZulu Natal and on to Swaziland and 3 nights in the Kruger Park. Then we take in the scenery of the Panorama Route on the way to Johannesburg, where the tour concludes.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Cape Town International Airport to Cape Town
Arrival at Cape Town International. Your accommodation is at the Waterfront. The Waterfront is our biggest attraction in Cape Town. The old harbour has been converted into a shopping complex with many restaurants and shops, situated at the waters edge. The shops there also stay open till late and one can walk around in the evening, its virtually crime free.

Day 2: Cape Town
No visit to Cape Town is complete without a visit to the famous Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope Reserve. We will spend the whole day driving around the peninsula, past many beaches, visit a penguin colony and take the funicular up to the Point. We also visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. You will get back late afternoon but with many good memories.

Day 3: Cape Town
Today I will show you the city centre and its Malay quarter, museum and the Cape of Good Hope Castle and a visit to the top of Table Mountain with the cable car weather permitting. You have the afternoon free.

Day 4: Cape Town to Oudtshoorn
We leave Cape Town after breakfast and travel along the N1, through the wine lands of Paarl and Worcester. Within one hour we are in the little Karoo – a semi desert but with fruit and wine farms along the Breede River. We can visit some of the wine cellars and take part in a tasting. Very soon we will arrive in the area of the Ostrich capital, Oudtshoorn. We will visit an ostrich farm where you will learn everything about this desert, flightless bird. We overnight in Oudtshoorn on a small farm – dinner is included in the price.

Day 5: Oudtshoorn to Knysna
After breakfast we will visit an ostrich farm where you will learn everything about this desert, flightless bird. After that we will again cross the mountains into the lush green and beach areas of the Garden Route. We can do a boat trip on the Knysna lagoon – eat oysters at the oyster bar or shop at the Knysna Quays. We will overnight at a Hotel in Knysna.

Day 6: Knysna to Addo Elephant National Park
Today we will travel a long the Tsitsikama mountains, walk in the rain forest and see an 800 year old Yellowwood tree. About lunchtime we will arrive at the Addo National Park where we will drive with our own vehicle or you can book an open vehicle drive with the Park. We will see many Elephants. Although there are other animal, like antelope, buffalo and rhino, zebras and warthogs, it’s the elephants that steal the show. There are more there per square kilometre than in the Kruger Park and on hot days one can see them play in the water hole! We are staying in one of the bungalows in the park.

Day 7: Addo National Park to Camdeboo National Park
After our breakfast we leave the Addo Park and drive inland towards Graaf Reinet. This quant village was the administrative centre of the Dutch East India Company in 1886 and boasts some wonderful Cape Dutch architecture. In the late afternoon we will visit the newest National Park, Camdeboo National Park and look at the spectacular Valley of Desolation. We will be staying at the Drosdy Hotel – a Museum piece itself.

Day 8: Camdeboo National Park to Ficksburg
After breakfast we depart and travel through the Great Karoo, a semi desert area known for its dinosaur fossils and wide open land interspersed with flat topped mountains. Towards the afternoon we are nearing the Drakensberg, our highest mountains. We will skirt around the Kingdom of Lesotho and come to our overnight lodge in Ficksburg.

Day 9: Ficksburg to Drakensberg
We depart from Ficksburg and travel all along the Maluti Mountains, part of the Drakensberg, through the Golden Gate National Park,till we get to the Cathedral Peak area of the Drakensberg, where we will stay at Didima.

Day 10: Drakensberg to Durban
We leave the Drakensberg behind and travel along the Natal Midlands towards Durban. Soon we will be surrounded by sugarcane fields and the tropical vegetation of Durban. After a short city tour we proceed to our hotel on the Durban promenade.

Day 11: Durban to Shakaland
First we will visit the Indian Market and then travel along the N2, northwards towards Shakaland. This very interesting hotel, which consists of Beehive huts, was originally built and used for the film, Shaka Zulu. Here we will have a cultural experience and try some of the traditional foods of the Zulu.

Day 12: Shakaland to Hluhluwe Provincial Wildlife Park
We leave Shakaland and travel, ever northwards to the Provincial Wildlife Park, Hluhluwe - We are staying at the wonderful Camp, Hilltop.

Day 13: Hluhluwe Provincial Wildlife Park
Full day game drives in my vehicle but you can also arrange an open vehicle drive with the Park.

Day 14: Hluhluwe Provincial Wildlife Park to St Lucia Wetland Park
Not very far from Hluhluwe is St Lucia Wetland Park. Its subtropical forests with giant dunes and an estuary. We will undertake a boat ride on the estuary where we will see many hippos and crocodiles.

Day 15: St Lucia Wetland Park
The Cape Vidal area has game and a lovely beach – we will spend the day exploring that area.

Day 16: St Lucia Wetland Park to Swaziland
Today we leave South Africa and travel into Swaziland, an independent African Kingdom, also known as the African Switzerland, due to its mountainous areas.

Day 17: Swaziland to Kruger National Park
In the morning we will visit the Swazi Cultural Village and learn something about the Swazi culture before we carry on towards the Kruger National Park. We drive though the park with my vehicle and hopefully see many animals along the way. We will arrive in the late afternoon at Skukuza and stay in a luxury bungalow, with view of the river.

Day 18: Kruger National Park
After breakfast we will continue our safari while driving through the Park and exit the Park at Orpen Gate and then proceed to the private game reserve, Thornybush, which borders on to the Kruger Park.

Day 19: Kruger National Park
Another day spent at Tangala - 2 game drives a day and all meals are included.

Day 20: Kruger National Park to Graskop
After our last early morning game drive, we will depart for the Panorama Route, on the Drakensberg escarpment. We visit Gods Window, the Blyde River Canyon and the Potholes and eventually spend the night at our hotel in Graskop.

Day 21: Graskop to Johannesburg
We depart for Johannesburg – about 5 hours drive and then check into our hotel near the airport.
