What makes the Eastern Cape so exciting is its incredible diversity. Lying in the south east of the country it includes on its list of credentials the Sunshine Coast, the Addo Elephant Park, the dry Karoo Heartland, the Baviaanskloof wilderness, the Amatola mountains, southernmost peaks of the Drakensberg, and the Wild Coast. The Eastern Cape's main attraction is its incredible coastline, which stretches from Storm's River Mouth via beautiful beaches, inlets, towns like St Francis Bay, Kenton-on-Sea, Port Alfred, and on to Port St Johns, and includes the two cities of Port Elizabeth and East London.
The sunshine coast is the beachside playground of anyone after a beach holiday. Washed by the warm Indian Ocean towns like Jeffreys Bay, Oyster Bay and Cape St Francis are idyllic. Part of the Eastern Coast's coastline is given over to the Wild Coast, a spectacularly rugged stretch of shoreline that in parts is virtually unnavigable. Typically this part of the country has a number of river mouths with wide floodplains and sandy bays and long stretches of open beach. There are coastal forests, estuaries and rocky shores, precipitous cliffs, waterfalls and quaint seaside towns like Cintsa, Coffee Bay, Qolora, Kei Mouth and Haga Haga.
Frontier country towns - Port Elizabeth and nearby Grahamstown, Alicedale, Bathurst, Bucklands, Colchester and Sidbury - are steeped in history. Whilst the Karoo heartland towns of Graaff Reinet, Nieu Bethesda and Queenstown add a unique beauty and artsy flavour to the Eastern Cape. The Amatola region is sometimes also referred to as the restless frontier because of the numerous historical frontier battles that took place here, has as its backdrop the densely forested mountains of the Amathole.
Right on the escarpment find the wooded, quintessentially English village of Hogsback, Stutterheim set beneath the Kologha range in the east, and down on the coast Gonubie and Kidds Beach are quite beautiful.
In all of these beautiful places and spaces find bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses, guest farms, campsites, country retreats, hotels and luxury safari style lodges to suit all budgets.
