DESCRIPTION:
Lavenders Blue is located in the Victorian village of Stanford, situated on the Klein River, and lying between Hermanus and De Kelders in the Western Cape, 150km from Cape Town.
Lavenders Blue is a romantic thatched cottage nestled in an established garden amongst mature mango, avocado, lemon and guava trees. The secluded garden offers ample space for family ball games, or quiet bird watching under the wild olive tree. A hammock is slung under the pergola, and views of the Kleinrivier Mountains beyond can be enjoyed while relaxing there with a good book.
Accommodation
Bedrooms
The downstairs bedroom has a queen size bed, and the upstairs loft room has a king size bed (or two singles), plus a separate single bed. The furniture is an eclectic mixture of Antique oak and Oregon. Pure cotton linen, wool duvets, electric blankets and sumptuous mosquito nets ensure a restful nights sleep.
Bathrooms
The downstairs bathroom has an original Victorian bath, and heated towel rail. The upstairs shower room is within the loft room. There is a secluded outdoor shower with hot and cold water – perfect for rinsing off after a swim in the river.
An open plan living and dining area is comfortably furnished, with the open fireplace the focal point. Happy doors lead onto the covered patio, where a built-in braai and outdoor furniture invite casual al fresco dining.
The gourmet kitchen has an imported gas stove, with generous oven, a microwave and ample fridge space. A laundry with washer and drier is available in a separate laundry room. Secure off-street parking is available.
Activities and Attractions
The cottage is situated within strolling distance of the river, and all village amenities. The Stanford Wandelpad meanders along the river bank nearby, and guests can enjoy a bird watching trip on one of the boats operating from the jetty. A special treat is to observe the otters fishing alongside your boat on a still, twilight evening.
The core of the village has been declared a historical area, and it is one of the three architecturally best preserved villages in the Western Cape. Visitors can enjoy a ‘Heritage walk’ past the local houses and buildings. The local committee has published an information booklet on the specially demarcated houses, and provides a fascinating insight into the history of the village.
The surrounding area is renowned for its magnificent fynbos, world acclaimed whale watching, and prolific bird life.
The Birkenhead microbrewery and Raka wine estate are close by. The local cheese factory produces award winning cheese, and there are superb restaurants and interesting antique shops. Country markets are held every Friday morning at the local art gallery, and a festive market takes place on the last Friday of every month in the village square during summer, and in the wine cellar of the local micro-brewery in winter. |
