DESCRIPTION:

The Franschhoek valley is undoubtedly the premier destination for visitors to the Western Cape. Nestled in the Hottentots Holland Mountains only one hours’ drive from Cape Town and Cape Town International Airport, Franschhoek is one of South Africa’s prettiest and most prestigious villages.

Settled in the 1600’s by the French Huguenots, Franschhoek has been producing some of South Africa’s finest wines, and it’s no coincidence that it is also referred to as the gourmet capital of South Africa. Franschhoek boasts some of South Africa’s award winning restaurants and vineyards.

Centrally situated, Franschhoek is only one hour’s drive by car to Hermanus where whale watching activities are the main attraction, 40 minutes from the Strand, (the nearest beach), and only 20 minutes from the old university town of Stellenbosch.

Activities

Among the many activities offered in the valley are hiking, mountain biking, golf, horse riding and let’s not forget wine tasting. There are as many as thirty-three vineyards situated in the valley most of which are open to the public for a tasting experience. Many of the vineyards now offer lunch in the form of indoor dining or outdoor picnics.

Franschhoek now rates as one of South Africa’s destinations of choice for weddings and conferences. Why not kick back and be pampered for the day at one of the many spa’s or wellness centers.

Visit the Huguenot monument and museum built as a tribute to the original settlers. Take a short trip to the Berg River Dam and explore the surrounding valley. L’Ormarins wine estate, approximately nine kilometers from Franschhoek, boasts the largest collection of vintage automobiles in the country.

Visit the old Victor Verster prison, (renamed the Drakenstein prison), which is the site of Nelson Mandela’s release, and hosts a fitting monument to Madiba. Take a beautiful scenic drive over the Franschhoek pass and visit the small farming community of Villiersdorp.

Dave & Mary Manning look forward to hosting you and ensuring that your visit to Franschhoek is a memorable one.
