DESCRIPTION:

Dolphin B&B is the ideal base from which to explore the barren and yet fascinating West Coast. Whether it be to wonder at the splash of spring flowers and whales mid-year, or to amble along pristine beaches in summer, the holidaymaker can be assured of a ‘Weskus’ welcome.

The West Coast is renowned for its hospitality and seafood. It is also home to the ‘veldkool’ (Trachyandra ciliata) and ‘gousblom’ (Gazania krebsiana), two of the fine species of indigenous veld flowers that abound here in springtime.

In winter the southern right whale (Balaena glacialis) is a frequent visitor, often in the company of the endemic Heaviside’s dolphin (Cephalorhynchus heavisidii) and dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus). If one is lucky, scores of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) can be seen leaping and slapping the water to herd in shoals of fish.

Strange-sounding dishes adorn the dinner table: ‘snoekkopsop’ or ‘bokkoms’ (eaten with ‘konfyt’, if you please!) washed down with a glass of wine from one of the nearby co-operatives make the local fare even more palatable.

For the more archaeologically minded, a visit to the West Coast Fossil Park is a must. Delve into the past; gaze through the window of antiquity at the remains of sabre-toothed tigers and the first bear found south of sub-Sahara.

Accommodation

The main en suite overlooks the calm waters of Britannia Bay. A bed-sitter room, with a double sleeper couch, and a single room (which also overlooks the sea) share a full bathroom.

For those who want to “do their own thing”, there is the option of self-catering (in the same accommodation) with microwave, two-plate stove, crockery, cutlery and sink for washing up. Bed linen and towels are provided and unit is only serviced when guests depart.

Please note: no smoking, no credit card payments and regrettably no children or pets allowed.

Facilities

There is a TV set (channels 1, 2 and 3 plus eTV) in the main en suite, a fridge for keeping drinks chilled and tea and coffee are provided. Our breakfasts are hearty and, weather permitting, guests are served on the deck looking out over the bay (and dolphins if one is lucky!) Braai facilities and gratis wood also are supplied. Other meals catered for by prior arrangement but it is important to let us know of any dietary requirements in advance. It should be noted that restaurants in the immediate vicinity are closed on Sunday evenings and Mondays.

DIRECTIONS:

From Stellenbosch / Somerset West
Take the R304/R302 via Malmesbury joining the N7. From the N7, turn left onto the R45 (to Hopefield). At the R27 (West Coast road), crossroad turn right (turning left takes one back to Cape Town. Approximately 5 km on, turn left onto a gravel road (only 4 km of it) to St Helena Bay. This will bring you to the R399 crossroad (right takes one to Velddrif and left takes you back to Vredenburg). Cross over the intersection and follow the road to Stompneusbaai via St Helena Bay.

Note: This route bypasses Vredenburg saving 20 km. However, if you need to go into Vredenburg itself, then cross over the intersection and travel 9 km to the town. Directions at the robot as you enter the town will show you the way out again (i.e. the route to Velddrif) and approximately 9 km on take left turn to St Helena Bay.

Travel 17km (in a westerly direction) passing the following: Turnoff to Laingville * St Helena Hotel * Police Station * St Helena shopping centre / Total petrol pumps and turnoff into Sandy Point Harbour * Da Gama Monument. * left turn gravel road to Paternoster. Bypass the Stompneusbaai fishing village on the left (known affectionately, because of the brightly-painted roofs, as ‘Smartietown’). At the end of this settlement turn left (signboards say ‘Britannia Bay’ and ‘Shelley Point’ and there’s a Dolphin B&B road sign pointing to the left). Bypass Golden Mile development on the right – as is the bay. This development is not sign-posted but you travel along its boundary white wall. At the entrance another Dolphin B&B sign draws you further on into old Britannia Bay. Pass a sign at a left turn-in that says Boulevard/Travelodge Caravan Park, then a row of blue gum trees. Here the road S-bends to the right. Just past the three Flagship townhouses there is a sign pointing to the right to Britannia Bay; there is also a B&B + S/C road sign. The road S-bends to the right (an untarred road goes straight) and snakes again, to the left. The third road to the right is Ecklonia Street (next after Nerina). The brown international Dolphin B&B sign points to turn right. Ours is the sixth house on the right overlooking the bay with a bright teal-blue roof and the Dolphin B&B sign clearly is to be seen. Parking either down the driveway or on the off-ramp just above (avoid parking on neighbour’s property “Joan se Plek” please).

From Durbanville
Take the R27 (West Coast road) via Milnerton/Melkbosstrand. Depending on whether you wish to go into Vredenburg or not, follow directions above.

From Cape Town
Take either the N7 (road to the north bypassing Malmesbury) or the R27 (West Coast road). Depending on whether you wish to go into Vredenburg or not, follow directions above.

From Cape Town North
From the N7 and outside the town of Piketberg, take the road to Aurora/Velddrif. In the town of Velddrif – which runs along the Berg River – take a left turn at the fourway crossing over the bridge of the River and past Cerebos/National Salt Works. Take next right hand turn (R399) heading to Vredenburg/St Helena Bay. Approximately 8 km on take right turn (in westerly direction) to Stompneusbaai via St Helena Bay. Follow instructions further as above.
