Activities & Attractions
Swellendam, the third oldest magisterial district in South Africa, nestling in the foothills of the majestic Langeberg mountain, is a charming town with a fascinating history. Strategically situated on the N2, approximately 240km from both Cape Town and George has much to offer visitors interested in heritage and culture, architecture, wildlife and outdoor adventure. It is also an ideal base from which to explore the neighboring Southern Cape, Breede River Valley and the Klein Karoo.
Visitors to Cypress Cottage are within walking distance from the many old buildings that have been declared National Monuments, one of the most interesting being the Dutch Reformed 'Moederkerk' with its eclectic architectural features and the famous Drostdy Museum Complex (1747) consisting of several historical buildings, a restaurant and gift shop. Visitors are welcome at the studios of well-known potters, the Sulina Faerie Sanctuary, preserved flower center at Stormsvlei and the Wildebraam Youngberry Liqueur Farm where the famous Braam liqueur is produced.
Wildlife and outdoor adventurers are invited to visit the nearby National Park and Nature Reserves. Bontebok National Park (7 km from Swellendam) provides sanctuary for herds of bontebok antelope, as well as other small buck species and Mountain Zebra. A total of 126 different bird species have also been identified here. Marloth Nature Reserve is a botanist's dream with an abundance of wild flowers and fynbos. Hiking trails have been established. De Hoop / Potberg Nature Reserve has seven distinct ecosystems and is and excellent spot from which to view the Southern Right whales with their calves from June to November.
For the sports lover, there is the usual sporting facilities like tennis courts, a squash court and bowling greens. In addition Swellendam offers horse trails and mountain biking in the forests, canoeing and river rafting on the Breede River, various water activities on the Buffeljags Dam as well as sunset cruises on either the dam or the river, including an excellent 9-hole golf course. |
