The Whale Coast
The Whale Coast has a lot to offer, walks along De Kelders cliffs with whales playing only meters from the shore. Boat based whale whatching or Great White shark diving trips depart in the mornings with a possible second trip around 12:00 with various operators departing from the Kleinbaai Harbour.
While dining at a restaurant in Gansbaai Harbour you can watch fishing boats going in and out. The fishing industry dates back to the earliest days of settlement in Gansbaai. It was named Gansgat after the Egyptian geese that had their nests around the fountain in the harbour.
Activities and Attractions
Climb the stairs at Danger point Lighthouse and enjoy the views. There is a reason for the name “Danger Point Peninsula” as many sailors found out through the ages to their shock and horror. This coast is spectacular but dangerous. There are however, various protected coves and bays. Stanford Cove in De Kelders is a traditional safe place to swim.
Another protected bay in the Walker Bay Reserve “Die Plaat”, is suitable for swimming and also a favourite place to catch a fish. Klipgat Trail is a 7km path meandering along the coast from Gansbaai harbour pass De Kelders to Klipgat Cave. The trail passes various caves and rock pools and crosses a unique habitat of rare coastal limestone fynbos vegetation. Franskraal and Pearly Beach has a long sandy beach to stroll for hours.
If you interested in experiencing the inland, book a guided or unguided hike, by foot or horses, exploring the unique coastal and mountain fynbos on the nearby farms and nature reserves. Find out more about the medicinal value of the fynbos plants.
The great variety of habitats in the Overberg is the reason why there is such an enormous diversity of bird-life such as the Black Oyster Catcher, Fish Eagle, Blue Crane and many other species. River cruises can be taken from the nearby town of Stanford on the Klein River, home to over 130 bird species. If weather permits there will always be time for a dip in the river.
Wine tasting on the fynbos route on the way to Cape Agulhas, the most southern tip of Africa, is the newest wine region in the Cape. The wine farms specialize in Sauvignon Blanc because of the cool breeze coming in from the ocean but make very good red wines to.
Just sit in the comfort at your favourite B&B with a glass of wine and enjoy the beautiful sunset with whales playing in the bay. That’s why De Kelders must be your first choice for your holiday destination. |
