About Vultures Lodge
Vultures Lodge nestles in the shade of the spectacular sandstone mountain, Aasvoëlberg. At 2207m (approximately 7240 feet), it is the highest peak in the province and has a unique feature, a 9 meter wide hole between two huge buttresses; the famous 'eye'. The mountain is a backdrop for the town Zastron in the south eastern Free State province of South Africa.
Vultures Lodge takes its name from the Cape Vulture (Gyps Coprotheres), which has favoured the cliffs of the mountain for nesting for a long time and is the site of the only colony of Cape Vultures to be found in the Free State.
Accommodation
Vultures Lodge consists of six en-suite rooms (in the main house). All the rooms are very spacious and are furnished with beautiful old furniture. Tastefully decorated and equipped with DStv, a bar fridge, fan, heater, hairdryer, good bedding and fitted with electric blankets. The house has a comfortable lounge and dining room, with a double sided wood fireplace in the dining room and the lounges' fireplace has a beautiful carved finish. There is a large outside sandstone living area to sit and relax, or admire the beautiful landscape and mountain backdrop.
There are also three self catering cottages. Each consists of one bedroom with a spacious open plan kitchen (fully equipped) and the lounge area is furnished with a sleeper couch. All three the cottages are provided with good bedding and towels. Each has a veranda, braai facility and outdoor furniture.
The property has secure fencing with an alarm system. There is shaded parking.

Feast on a scrumptious breakfast, Delicious dinners are served on request (book before 4pm).

Zastron is the gateway to explore the mountains of Southern Lesotho and Drakensberg region via Telebridge, Lundeensnek or Lady Grey to Rhodes. To explore the magnificent Aasvoeëlberg with its famous eye and the surrounded Maloti Mountains, Vultures Lodge, with its rich history and interesting stories of Renier de Winnaar, is the place to be.
