About Vultures Lodge
Vultures Lodge, nestles in the shade of the spectacular sandstone mountain, Aasvoëlberg. At 2207m (approximately 7240 feet), it is the highest peak in the province and has a unique feature, a 9 meter wide hole between two huge buttresses; the famous 'eye'. The mountain is a backdrop for the town Zastron in the south eastern Free State province of South Africa.
Vultures Lodge takes its name from the Cape Vulture (Gyps Coprotheres), which has favoured the cliffs of the mountain for nesting for a long time and is the site of the only colony of Cape Vultures to be found in the Free State.
Zastron is the gateway to explore the mountains of Southern Lesotho and Drakensberg region via Telebridge, Lundeensnek or Lady Grey to Rhodes. To explore the magnificent Aasvoeëlberg with its famous eye and the surrounded Maloti Mountains, Vultures Lodge, with its rich history and interesting stories of Renier de Winnaar, is the place to be.
