About Rietkuil Farm Cottage

Rietkuil Farm Cottage is a third generation working cattle, sheep and maize farm. The farm is only 2 hours' drive from Johannesburg and is ideal for a family retreat. Get away from the city rush and surround yourself with cattle, chickens, geese and sheep; the farm setting will do wonders for the soul.

Self Catering Accommodation

The cottage consists of four cozy bedrooms furnished with antique wooden furniture handed down from generation to generation. There are three twin rooms and one double room with a king-size bed and large sitting area. There is also a room adjacent to the house with twin beds, toilet and shower.

The cottage has one bathroom to share - (bath / shower and separate toilet). There is also a double room adjacent to the house with a en-suite bathroom (shower only). The cottage has no TV and not DSTV facilities.

Facilities

Many a leg of lamb has been roasted in the fully equipped rustic kitchen (complementary coffee, tea and sugar are provided as well as dishwashing liquid, sponges and a tea towel). Fresh milk will be delivered to your door every morning.

The lounge and dining areas are spacious with sunny windows and a fireplace. The large patio is ideal for gazing at the stars or to just relax whilst enjoying a steaming cup of coffee, reading that special book or just gazing at the stars.

On-site Activities

Apart from the numerous farm activities, like milking cows the old fashioned way, there's also more than 3000 ha to explore on foot or on mountain bike. For the serious mountain biker there is a 65km single track trail on the banks of the Vals River only 30km from the farm towards Bothaville.

Cool off in the “plaasdam” or take a short walk down to the Otterspruit for a game of “kleilat” or try your hand at catching cat fish (bring your own tackle).

There is a variety of bird life on the numerous pans on the farm. Try your luck spotting the endangered “ouvolk” lizard. Night drives can be arranged for the adventurous who would like to see a porcupine, jackal, springhare, aardvark or ant eater roaming the grasslands.

Remember to pack your farm shoes, a good book, binoculars, excellent coffee and an expectation to wind down. Just remember that all activities are subject to change depending on the season, the weather and the moon!
