The secluded Groenfontein valley with it's charming architecture is one of the Western Cape's best kept secrets. This lovely home has 4 comfortable en-suite bedrooms (3 star graded) in the main house and 3 luxury rooms (4 star graded), 2 in a converted weaving-shed and 1 in a converted milking-shed. The Retreat is an old Victorian farmhouse in the lovely Groenfontein Valley conservancy, bordering on the 129.000ha Swartberg Nature Reserve, recently proclaimed a world heritage site, and situated 20kms northeast of Calitzdorp on a scenic, winding gravel road, 59kms northwest of Oudtshoorn, and 38kms southwest of the Cango caves, both half gravel, just off the magical Route 62. The house, filled with yellow-wood and mellow Oregon pine, has a lounge and dining room - each with its own ceramic fireplace to keep them cosy on chilly winter evenings - leading onto a wide verandah, overlooking the sweeping gardens and majestic Swartberg mountains. Vegetarians are welcome and we cater for problem diets. The meals at Groenfontein have a health emphasis, using herbs and vegetables from the garden.
