About Osfontein Guest Farm
Situated in Carnarvon, Osfontein Guest Farm offers self catering accommodation in corbelled houses, an old stone shed and a tree house (the first tree house accommodation in the heart of the Karoo).
Corbelled houses have a unique history and only appear in a small area of the Karoo. They were the first houses built in the 1800’s by the Voortrekkers and, due to a shortage of building materials such as wood, they were built entirely of stone making them warm during the winter months and surprisingly cool during summer.
Self Catering Accommodation
The Corbelled House:
The house still has the original fireplace with its thick yellowwood beam. The house has two rooms; one bedroom is furnished with a double bed and the other with two single beds. The bathroom has a basin, loo and shower. Bed linen and towels are provided.
The kitchen is equipped for self catering with an electric stove and fridge / freezer. Crockery and cutlery is provided. There is no electricity but candles are provided for lighting.
The Old Stone Shed:
What was originally the sheep shearing shed is now a comfortable self catering unit for five guests. The shed is built of stone with reed ceilings and is equipped with electricity. There are two bedrooms; one furnished with a double and single bed and the other with two single beds. The bathroom has a basin, toilet and shower. There is also an outdoor shower. Linen and towels are provided.
The lounge has a fireplace which adds to the atmosphere of this quaint unit and provides warmth during the cold winter months. The kitchen is equipped with everything needed for a self catering break.
The Tree House:
This is the first tree house accommodation in the Karoo and consists of a luxury tent on a deck between trees. The tent is furnished with a double bed and all linen and towels are provided. Self catering facilities include a two place gas stove, a microwave and fridge / freezer.
The Tree House is only used from the end of September to April – it is too cold otherwise!
Fires can be made outside and wood can be bought at the farmhouse. The farmhouse is within walking distance if anything is needed and also has a swimming pool where guests can cool off.
With all the wide open spaces, guests can go for long walks or head of on their mountain bikes. Sitting outside you will see the incredible star filled Karoo sky at night. This is the ideal place for guests who want absolute privacy and do not want to hear noisy cars or people, just the absolute tranquility of a Karoo farm, surrounded by the veld.
