About Natte Valleij

The historic farm of Natte Valleij set on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains, is within easy reach of Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Cape Town (35 minutes). Natte Valleij oozes a sense of history with its homestead, old wine cellars, brandy stills, magnificent mature gardens with ancient trees, pergolas and ponds that all are surrounded by whitewashed walls.

The present owners, the Milner family, bought Natte Valleij in 1969 and the old vines were pulled out and replaced with grass paddocks and for the next 27 years the farm served as a thoroughbred stud producing many classic winners. The horses have now all been retired and replaced by classic wines, friendly and efficient hospitality in our self-catering and bed & breakfast accommodation in Stellenbosch. We welcome the opportunity to share with you the ambience of a bygone era.

Our self catering cottages are The Cellar Cottage and The Vineyard Cottage. The Cellar Cottage (sleeps two) is situated next to the wine cellars while the Vineyard Cottage (three double bedrooms) is the oldest on the property, dating back to 1715.

The Bed and Breakfast suite is situated off the courtyard of the main homestead. Breakfast is served under the vines of the homestead during summer.

It has three double bedrooms, two bathrooms (one with shower), sitting room with fireplace, dining room and a kitchen. The stoep (patio) where you can peacefully enjoy a glass of wine overlooks the horse paddock with BBQ (braai) facilities on the lawn.

Cellar Cottage:
The Cellar Cottage is situated next to the old wine cellars and is a cosy one bedroom self-catering cottage. It has a double bedroom, sitting room, into which two beds can be arranged for children, bathroom and kitchen. Also with a stoep and BBQ (braai facilities).

There is much to keep our guests occupied whilst staying with us.

We are very lucky to have access into our neighbouring nature reserve. There are herds of Springbok, Wildebeest and Zebra to be seen and if you are lucky, even some Eland and Gemsbok. One is also able to walk or mountain bike up the slopes of the Simonsberg.

180 species have been identified at Natte Valleij including rarities such as the Wood Owl, Amethyst Sunbird, Southern Boubou and Glossy Ibis as well as regulars such as the Black Saw Wing Swallow, Pearl-breasted Swallow, Giant Kingfisher, Bar Throated Apalis and Swee Waxbill. Owner Charles is a very keen birder and can take guests on half or full day tours.

Guests are welcome to taste our wines at Natte Valleij and embark on a trip through the winelands visiting the many famous estates a mere stone’s throw away. We have a well-appointed tasting room where our wines can be tasted and bought. Cellar tours can easily be arranged and during the season (February to March) guests can visit the cellar and watch the fascinating process of wine being made.
