Medike is situated in the Limpopo Province about 36 km west of Louis Trichardt (Makhado). Medike is a Natural Heritage Site in the picturesque western Soutpansberg where the Sand River (Mongezi) has cut an impressive gorge through the mountain.

The best way to savour Medike's rich ecological diversity, is on foot. More than 30 km of marked hiking trails meander through forested kloofs, rugged gorges, waterfalls, archaeological sites and mountain streams to waterfalls, rock formations and a mysterious Bushman shelter with ancient rock art.

The diversity of natural habitats found on Medike affords a large variety of fauna and flora. Nearly 200 bird species have been identified including the Black Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Lanner falcon, African Hawk Eagle and the rare Bat Hawk and the Narina Trogon.

Medike is also home to several of the rarest African mammals like the leopard, anteater, brown hyena and pangolin. Klipspringer, bushbuck, Sharpe's grysbok, warthogs, baboons, vervet monkeys, bushbabies and hyraxes are frequently seen. Medike is also known for its butterflies. The most common reptiles are the endemic Soutpansberg lizard, black mamba and python. More than 250 tree species including Real Yellowwood, Baobab and the rare Pepperbark provide a haven for keen botanists.
