Nestling against the Swartberg Mountains, it grew from the farm, Kweekvallei, established in 1762 on the banks of a river whose source is sparkling springs in the Swartberg Mountains. The life-giving water was used to good effect to create an oasis in the otherwise dry Great Karoo. It still runs through the streets in bubbling furrows, nurturing fragrant gardens and adding a gentle murmur to the tranquil streets.
