Dolphin B&B is the ideal base from which to explore the barren and yet fascinating West Coast. Whether it be to wonder at the splash of spring flowers and whales mid-year, or to amble along pristine beaches in summer, the holidaymaker can be assured of a ‘Weskus’ welcome. The West Coast is renowned for its hospitality and seafood. It is also home to the ‘veldkool’ (Trachyandra ciliata) and ‘gousblom’ (Gazania krebsiana), two of the fine species of indigenous veld flowers that abound here in springtime. In winter the southern right whale (Balaena glacialis) is a frequent visitor, often in the company of the endemic Heaviside’s dolphin (Cephalorhynchus heavisidii) and dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus). If one is lucky, scores of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) can be seen leaping and slapping the water to herd in shoals of fish. Strange-sounding dishes adorn the dinner table: ‘snoekkopsop’ or ‘bokkoms’ (eaten with ‘konfyt’, if you please!) washed down with a glass of wine from one of the nearby co-operatives make the local fare even more palatable. For the more archaeologically minded, a visit to the West Coast Fossil Park is a must. Delve into the past; gaze through the window of antiquity at the remains of sabre-toothed tigers and the first bear found south of sub-Sahara. AccommodationThe main en suite overlooks the calm waters of Britannia Bay. A bed-sitter room, with a double sleeper couch, and a single room (which also overlooks the sea) share a full bathroom. For those who want to “do their own thing”, there is the option of self-catering (in the same accommodation) with microwave, two-plate stove, crockery, cutlery and sink for washing up. Bed linen and towels are provided and unit is only serviced when guests depart. Please note: no smoking, no credit card payments and regrettably no children or pets allowed. FacilitiesThere is a TV set (channels 1, 2 and 3 plus eTV) in the main en suite, a fridge for keeping drinks chilled and tea and coffee are provided. Our breakfasts are hearty and, weather permitting, guests are served on the deck looking out over the bay (and dolphins if one is lucky!) Braai facilities and gratis wood also are supplied. Other meals catered for by prior arrangement but it is important to let us know of any dietary requirements in advance. It should be noted that restaurants in the immediate vicinity are closed on Sunday evenings and Mondays.
