The Local Area
The West Coast is well known for its yearly spring flower displays turning the veld into a wonderland, with shows at nearby Hopefield and Darling.
With more than 200 species the cabin is a birdwatcher’s paradise and hides can be visited at Rocher Pan and the Berg River estuary, home to countless sea birds of all description.
The Country Cabin is well situated for day trips to the Cape Gannet colony at Lambert’s Bay, an important breeding place for the threatened species, as well as the few remaining jackass penguins.
The West Coast National Park, near Langebaan was established to protect the area's wealth of natural life, allowing nature to take its course unhindered by man in the areas now associated with endangered fauna and flora. The shores of the lagoon have a myriad examples of life: countless molluscs, crustaceans and other living organisms.
Game can be spotted in the reserve, including antelope, zebra, wildebeest, ostriches, Cape wildcats and many smaller animals and tortoises. As a bonus for birdwatchers, birds of prey perch on posts, unhindered by passing cars.
At the West Coast Fossil Park, see fossils of bears, sabre-tooth cats, short-necked giraffes and many other exotic animals which inhabited the west coast area some 5 million years ago, or take part in activities such as nature / bike trails through the park.
There is a huge variety to discover on the West Coast, enjoy it!
Or you can just chill out at the pool, followed by a sundowner and a cosy braai.
