About Buffalo Thorn Safari Lodge

Buffalo Thorn Safari Lodge is situated on the Farm Engelsea only 20km from the Martinsdrift / Groblersbrug border post and is the ideal stop over on route to Botswana or Zimbabwe. The lodge is named after the Buffalo Thorn Tree, also called the Blinkblaar-Wag-‘n-Bietjie in Afrikaans. We hope that you too would like to linger a little longer after your arrival and that this special place will also be a home- from-home experience during your stay.

This 4 star luxury lodge is part of a private game reserve and is designed to accommodate over-nighters or an exclusive self catering group of up to 20 people but fully catered stays can also be arranged.

The colonial styled accommodation embraces nature at every turn and offers al the privacy and superior comfort you would need for uninterrupted relaxation.

Every luxury lodge chalet has an en-suite bathroom, outside rock shower, fridge, kitchenette or coffee bar, air conditioner and deck. The overnight chalets have well equipped kitchens, patio with dinning set and built in braai (barbecue) overlooking the water hole as well as en-suite bathrooms with double vanities, baths and showers.

The main building with its fireplace, satellite TV lounge and dining room leads on to the big hearty stoep, overlooking the waterhole and makes for great entertainment. The stoep also leads to the swimming pool and the boma, forming the perfect place to bring family and friends together around a crackling fire.

Buffalo Thorn’s philosophy of simplistic luxury and getting back to nature is not only enhanced by the accommodation but also mark the professionalism and service of our well trained staff. Apart from the daily service, our lodge manager will attend to all your needs at night fall- from lighting the fire and setting the table to assisting you in the kitchen.

Here in the heart of the African Bushveld you will be refreshed and uplifted by an inspiring sense of open and unspoilt space, big skies, compelling views and an unmistakable closeness to nature.

Attractions and Activities

The in-house buffalo breeding program can be viewed from the viewing deck opposite the lodge whiles enjoying a sun downer or your early morning coffee. Morning feeds are a firm favourite as these wild and unpredictable animals can then be watched from the safety of the viewing deck as they eat, drink and take a mud bath.

Game drives and personalised guided bush walks are some of the activities you can enjoy during your stay. Our tracker and ranger is a real delight with an unparalleled knowledge of animal behaviour and a passion for sharing that with people. On these walks you will find the footprints (trails) of many species including leopard, hyena, zebra, giraffe, kudu, blue wildebeest, impala, nyala, red hartebeest, gems buck, eland, warthog, bushpig, jackal, duiker, steenbuck, meerkat, monkeys, and many more. The nocturnal animals include caracal, civet, cerval and porcupine. Not to mention the hundreds of bird species that might be watched and identified.

Other activities in our surrounding area is the are a nine hole Golf Course on the banks of the Limpopo river, a crocodile farm and tea garden with mosaic studio - all within 35km traveling distance.

The essence of a visit to Buffalo Thorn Safari Lodge is the change to slow down and absorb the natural beauty of a landscape uncluttered by noise and pollution.
