Surfing film pioneer Bruce Brown hunted the world's perfect surf spots in the 1960's cult film classic ' The Endless Summer'. The tag line; 'The Search for the Perfect Wave'. Featured surf spot; Seal Point, Cape St Francis Bay, sunny South Africa.
Crowned 'the Father of Surf Films', Bruce in turn exposed this local swell that starred in the film later to be dubbed as 'Bruce's Beauties'. Surf the Seal Point reeling tube beauties that legendary surfers Mike Hynson and Robert August travelled the world to ride in this surfing documentary. A surf spot for the fearless, this exposed point break along the Jeffrey's Bay coastline, is favoured alongside Jeffreys Bay (nicknamed 'J-Bay') as an ultimate wave ride. Suitable for experienced surfers who enjoy uncrowded surfs even in pumping swells.
Most of Seal Point's swell is generated from ground swells with an angle from a South South Easterly direction producing the best swell. An off shore wind blowing in a North Westerly direction is the best breeze to surf this point in. To combat the ecological effect that time has eroded on this Indian Ocean surf spot since the film release, top-notch artificial reefs are being introduced to produce an awesome barrelling wave. These 3 possibly 4 reefs will widen this warm white sanded beach and regulate the sand flow around the bay. The reefs will be man-made from supersized geotextile fabric bags which will be filled with sand from the local Kromme River Estuary. The reef will produce a fast, hollow, right hand breaking wave and a short, left-hander for an intense ride.
The split peak reefs will generate outstanding quality waves predicted to pump out a 100m long wave ride to be harnessed by experts. The reefs will simply break the swell so each beach breaker will still have its own natural characteristics and characteristic Seal Point thrill. This world-class surf spot is reliable supplying an average of 150 quality surfing days annually. The swell starts working at less than 1m (3ft) and holds over 3m (10ft). Suit up, keep an eye out for sharks, watch for urchins, beware the rips (so don't snake out!) and enjoy Seals.
