Bearded Vulture or 'Lammergeier'

The reserve is named after this magnificent creature, the Bearded Vulture or Lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus). The Lammergeier feeds exclusively on carrion - specializing on bones, which are carried into the sky and dropped to smash on rocks below.

With only 200+ pairs left in Southern Africa, Sightings of the endangered Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture) are something to behold. Cape Vulture, Jackal Buzzard, Crested Crane & Black Eagle as well as a rich variety of other bird life, are regularly spotted on the reserve. A longstanding policy of Holistic Conservation Farming has been followed resulting in the Isted family being awarded the prestigious Grasslands Society of South Africa "Conservation Farmer of the Year" award for 1997.

Spend time at the vulture restaurant admiring the majestic Lammergeier or take a trip to the vulture sanctuary which is host to approximately 30 Breeding pairs of Cape Vulture.

Over 282 Species have been identified in the area.
