DESCRIPTION:

You won't miss Trading Places in Smithfield. Our distinctive colour and style make us a landmark in this little village - one of the few left in the Free State with a genuine frontier atmosphere.

Smithfield, on the Free State's N6, is conveniently close to the N1 and other national roads, making it the perfect stopover. The village is small yet offers all the comfort you require including two good restaurants and even a massage therapist.

ACCOMMODATION

Rich, plum-coloured walls with white pillars and a fabulous collection of vintage enamel advertising signs from all over southern Africa make us distinctive on the outside. Come inside and find distinction of another kind: enjoy our large, comfortable, individually furnished suites.

We offer three large suites, all individually furnished.

Double Suite:
This huge suite has a double bed and - a fabulous feature this - a double shower.

Triple Suite:
This suite has a double bed and a single bed with a shower en suite - did we mention the angels that will sing you sleep at night?

Family Suite:
The family suite has two bedrooms with a shared bathroom. The main bedroom of the family suite offers a double bed, a wonderful old fireplace, an elegant sitting area with choice khelims and an Edwardian day bed.

All suites come with wall mounted heaters in the bedroom and bathroom, electric blankets or hot water bottles, cosy winter linen and plenty of blankets. In summer, fans and cool sheets bring a lull from the day's heat.

BREAKFAST

We serve breakfast outside whenever the weather allows, so that you can enjoy our view of the mountain. And we're in easy walking distance of two restaurants where you can be sure of a good dinner and excellent service.

ACTIVITIES & ATTRACTIONS

But it's not just the comfort, secure parking and fabulous meals that have guests coming back - they also enjoy our many activities.

We have well-kept birding and indigenous plant secrets; little-known Anglo-Boer War battle sites - still untouched; the Caledon Museum; game viewing nearby; San rock painting and a charming country golf course. The mountain bike and road cycling here is superb and, with enough notice, we can arrange for an experienced cyclist to show you the best routes; there's canoeing on the village dam as well as hiking, tennis, bowls.

Birders can contact Carmel for more about our local birding specials, as well as an up to date list of the birds seen in the region. Our gardens are almost exclusively indigenous, and Carmel would be delighted to point out the endemics - including two unusual winter-flowering bulbs, massonia jasminiflora (veldskoenblaar) and androcymbium melanthioides (pyjama plant). During early summer there is another special treat when the gorgeous inkplant decorates the local golf course.

Walkers: Carmel will guide energetic walkers up the mountain behind the house, showing you the treasure trove of Anglo-Boer War graffiti, a cave with San rock art and other sites. The trail takes you through a conservancy and you may well see buck and other animals. Travelling with well-behaved pets? There are plenty of good walks for your dogs here, and both restaurants are dog-friendly. But please remember to book your accommodation ahead as we like to give our resident canines proper notice.

Geo-cachers will also find it worthwhile to visit Trading Places. Not only can you be sure of a rich haul of caches in and around Smithfield, but there's even a cache on our property.

And if all you want to do is read or sleep, Trading Places is your ideal destination with good books, comfortable chairs and beds, uninterrupted views of the mountain, sunsets that leave you breathless and a spectacular starry night sky. Makes you want to try Trading Places with us, doesn't it?
