DESCRIPTION:

Amohela ho Spitskop is a 310 hectare Country Retreat in the magnificent Eastern Free State Highlands, on the Clocolan / Ficksburg border.

Nestled in a valley between Ficksburg and Clocolan, a visit to this 310 ha privately owned Conservation Estate is an absolute must. Built from beautiful local stone, the cottages are large, luxurious, tastefully equipped for self catering, the decor exceptional. With huge open fires, big comfy couches, books, magazines and views to die for, this is the perfect getaway for the discerning guest.

The Estate offers fly fishing, walks, hikes, mountain and cycle trails, small game, birding, beautiful stars and seclusion and privacy. Rediscover your soul in the vast space and timelessness of the Highlands, where magnificent sunrises and sunsets begin and end each day.

ACCOMMODATION

Each free standing house has a superb open plan living area with a well equipped kitchen, charming lounge and dining area and plenty of space and light.

Porcupine House and Guinea Fowl House each have two superb heated bedrooms and two heated bathrooms, whilst Mongoose House has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. French doors and windows lead from both the lounge and bedrooms onto a covered deck, with magnificent views of the Maluti Mountains. Each house has a Weber Braai.

The houses are self catering and fully serviced on a daily basis. Full English breakfasts are served at Dassie House, the beautifully restored original farmhouse (on request)

ACTIVITIES

Hikes and walks have been laid out and each house has a Trails Map. Watch out for shy steenbuck, elusive rhebuck, dassies sunning on rocks, black harriers cruising the veldt and mongoose and meercat families out rooting for food.

Birding is excellent with those Free State "specials" chats and larks in abundance. Blue and White Quilled Korhaan are resident, secretary birds a frequent sighting. Large flocks of water fowl, waders and comical guinea fowl are seen daily on dams and in the fields, and blue crane a rare and stunning sight. The Retreat has received a Birder Friendly Establishment status from Birdlife South Africa.

A 2 ha dam is well stocked with rainbow trout, and adjacent deep water quarry is stocked with rainbow trout, black bass and carp. A further 5ha dam is stocked with rainbow trout, black bass, and that latest of fly fishing fun, sharptooth catfish. Catch and release is encouraged, only fly fishing methods and equipment are permitted and each cottage has a bag limit charged per kilogram for take-home catch.

Ficksburg, the home of the Cherry Festival is a 20 minute drive. The Retreat, on 14 kms of gravel road, is an easy 3½ hour drive from Johannesburg and 1¾ hour drive from Bloemfontein.

Vintage Tractor Fair

Every year since 1989 a Vintage Tractor and Engine Fair has been held in Clocolan, in the scenic Eastern Free State Highlands. Tractors are sent from as far afield as Natal and the Fair has grown from just 29 tractors in 1989 to 153 in recent years. For additional Info please see Vintage Tractor Fair.
