Enjoy the awe-inspiring night skies of the Karoo and visit SALT (South African Largest Telescope) in Sutherland, while enjoying numerous attractions en-route. Ending tour with a new dimension in star gazing with Wayne Herschel and his Laser Star Viewing concept.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Port Elizabeth to Steytlerville
In the morning we depart from Port Elizabeth, situated in the Nelson Mandela Bay, on our way to the hinterland of the Karoo on the first day of our wonderful 'Star Gazing' Tour. We arrive in the late morning at the historical town of Steytlerville in the Eastern Cape, established in 1875 and situated between the Grootrivier Hoogte and Baviaanskloof Mountains. This is a typical Karoo farming community and we book into a Karoo farm, steeped in history, for our overnight stay. After lunch and a short rest we take a drive into Steytlerville to see the historical sites. After a delicious South African cooked dinner we can enjoy a Night Game Drive to view the animals and on return we do a spell of star gazing at the beautiful clear Karoo night with the telescopes housed on the farm.

Day 2: Steytlerville to Prince Albert
After a hearty breakfast we travel through the magnificent Meiringspoort Pass to the quaint town of Prince Albert in the heart of the famous Swartberg Mountains, arriving for lunch at the Abrahamskraal Farm Lodge or similar - our stop over for the night. After lunch we can visit the site of fossilized reptile footprints or any of the other various places of interest such as: The Olive Farm, The Museum, Karoo Art, The Weave Shop etc. This can be discussed beforehand. After dinner we again are able to enjoy the awe-inspiring night sky of the Karoo.

Day 3: Prince Albert to Sutherland
After a leisurely breakfast we leave for Matjiesfontein, the famous English Hamlet in the heart of the Karoo. Here we have the option to visit the Automobile and Train Museum. After refreshments we continue to Sutherland, the coldest town in South Africa. We visit the interesting graveyard and church, steeped in Boer War History before booking in at our next stay over. After dinner we can view the stars through a telescope on the farm and for the avid stargazers-you can rise very early in the morning to view Venus (weather permitting).

Day 4: Sutherland
After breakfast we travel via Salpeterkop, the last active volcano south of the Equator some 66 million years ago, to 'SALT' - "Southern African Largest Telescope" for a tour of this famous and magnificent astronomical instrument. If viewing available at SALT - it shall be arranged in the evening.

Day 5: Sutherland to Cape Town
This day we travel into the “Mother City” of Cape Town, through the Hex River Valley, over the du Toitskloof Pass via Paarl to our hotel in Bloubergstrand. Leisure time or beach walk.
After dinner we take astronomy to a new dimension by studying the stars with laser, lead by Wayne Herschel, the well known author and astronomer.

Day 6: Cape Town
Today we do a wine tour on one of the wine estates in Franschoek and Stellenbosch before travelling into Cape Town for a city centre tour and a visit to the Diamond Works. The evening is spent at the V&A Waterfront. Clients dropped off at airport or hotel. Tour ends.
This tour can be extended to 7 or 8 days if more sightseeing is wanted in Cape Town and surrounds.
