Cultural Calabash in Taung

Cultural Calabash in Taung, North West Province: The North West Cultural Calabash takes place in the rural village of Taung, home of the famous Taung child skull found in the early 20th century. The North West Cultural Calabash is a multi - disciplined youth arts festival which include Local and District Selections, as well as a Provincial Festival held annually in the North West Province and culminating in the village of Taung and aimed at an adult audience.

This developmental arts festival has three components. Amateurs and semi-professional artists audition during April/May in twenty two municipal districts of the North West Province. The best of these are then showcased at 4four District events held in the main towns of the province during July. In September, the winners in each of the categories compete at the Main Event in Taung.

Professional artists are also invited to present new productions at the Main Event in Taung. This is combined with a popular music concert for a family audience.

Taung is experiencing a development boom, of which the annual Calabash festival is a major component. Accommodation is at the nearby Tusk Taung Hotel, in the village itself where you can stay with locals and learn how they live, as well as in surrounding towns, especially in the scenic Vaalharts Agricultural Scheme.

The Calabash is supported by the North West Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, its founding sponsor the Transnet Foundation and its venue partner the Mmabana Foundation for Arts, Culture and Sport.
