About Pat Busch 4x4 Trail

This Thing to Do no longer exists - This page is for reference purposes only

Just outside the valley of wine and roses, as Robertson is affectionately known, is the Pat Busch Nature Reserve. Nestled in the Langeberg Mountain Range of the Western Cape, this reserve showcases the untouched splendour of South Africa, but is conveniently situated just two hours’ drive from Cape Town, making it an ideal weekend getaway.

The Pat Busch 4x4 Trail is situated within the borders of the nature reserve and extends for some seven kilometres. It is a grade four route that takes an hour or two to complete. This circular route is made up of gravel, rock slabs, deep ruts and even some holes along the way, left by vehicles that tried to negotiate tricky parts in the past, some unsuccessfully.

The route may be short but, as it climbs the Spitzkopf Mountain, drivers will soon realise that they are in for some surprisingly steep sections with loose rock and gravel terrain. When tackling the route after the rainy season, both the drivers and their vehicles are put to the test, and there is almost always a slide involved. However, escape routes are available for those not wanting quite as much in the way of adrenalin. The views from the top of the mountain are nothing short of breath-taking and, as drivers and passengers admire the expanses of the Breede River Valley below, the fun and excitement of the trail will only be reinforced.

The summit is the perfect place for a picnic, so drivers are advised to pack a lunch and enjoy the views at leisure.

The Pat Busch 4x4 Trail is a self-drive one, and the reserve is open to drivers all year round. Other activities, which can be combined with your 4x4 adventure, include hiking, bird watching, swimming, fishing, and mountain biking.
