The Klein (Little) Karoo is one of South Africa’s most uniquely beautiful destinations. The small towns, rugged vegetation, and endless mountain ranges combine to create a place of ethereal beauty. It is, undoubtedly, quite unlike anywhere else on the planet. And it is within this one-of-a-kind setting that the lovely Karusa Vineyard is set.
This vineyard takes full advantage of the serenity of its surrounds to create a place in which wine-lovers can relax and sample some of the delicious wines for which South Africa is famous. It is in the quiet little village of Schoemanshoek, which is on the way to the Cango Caves. These caves have earned global acclaim for their size, the extraordinary stalactite and stalagmite formations, and the excellent use of lighting to showcase these to the full.
Karusa is a family-run business that is famous for its excellent Cap Classique, as well as its range of other wines that have a distinct Mediterranean influence. The collection includes a number of different sauvignon blancs, chardonnays, syrah, merlots, pinot noirs, shirazes, and blends.
In addition, this is a craft brewery, producing a variety of excellent craft beers. In fact, it was the first full grain microbrewery in the Klein Karoo. Try the easy-drinking Long Neck Blonde on a hot Karoo day; or the Premium Draft, the Karusa Zwartberger, for a more complex beer experience. The Caveman’s Dry is a chocolate stout that is perfect for chilly evenings.
To finish off a tasting of wine and beer, there is a comprehensive lunch menu that includes some local ingredients and dishes to tantalise and tempt. But, the menu is dynamic, and will change through the course of the year to make the most of the available ingredients.
Karusa has its own fruit orchards where apricots, nectarines and plums are sweetened by the sunshine. These are not only beautiful, but delicious to sample and buy.
Karusa is located near to a number of the best tourist attractions in the Klein Karoo. In addition to the Cango Caves, there is the Cango Wildlife Ranch, a number of ostrich farms, Buffelsdrift Game Reserve, and the breath-taking Swartberg Pass.
