About Lalibela Game Reserve

Lalibela Game Reserve covers 7 500 hectares of pristine Eastern Cape countryside. Due to this prime positioning, it is not subject to the threat of malaria. Its convenient location means that the Lalibela Game Reserve is only about an hour’s drive from Nelson Mandela Bay (the main city of which is Port Elizabeth). In addition, it is situated nearby to the world-renowned Addo Elephant Park, which is home to about 500 African Elephants as well as lion, buffalo, eland, the black-backed jackal, warthog, zebra, giraffe, and hundreds of bird species.

Did you know? On thrilling night drives under the vast African sky, we search for the elusive bat-eared fox, aarvark, black-backed jackal, aardwolf and the curious spring hare.

The Eastern Cape Province is the natural habitat of a notable variety of fauna and flora, much of which is preserved and celebrated at the Lalibela Game Reserve. This part of the country is renowned for its warm, friendly folk and hospitable welcomes for visitors from all over South Africa and the world, which lures them back year after year.

Being a quieter, less urbanised province, the Eastern Cape countryside is beautiful and provides spectacular vistas and magnificent opportunities for visitors to be a part of this unadulterated prettiness. Nestled in the heart of it, Lalibela Game Reserve showcases the loveliness of the landscape and its natural abundance.

The reserve is spacious, spanning an area of some 7 500 hectares. As such, it is the ideal home for a great number of animal species, including the Big Five; which comprises lions, leopards, buffaloes, rhinos and elephants. Spotting these in their wild habitat is thrilling and makes for lasting memories and precious photographs. Other animals here include hyena, jackal, giraffe, warthog, lynx, cheetah and a variety of antelope species roaming the plains. The combination of predator and prey makes for a stunning experience, in which the dynamic between these impressive animals can be seen first-hand and uninterrupted by bars or cages.

Game drives during the day and the night give Lalibela’s visitors the ideal opportunities to spot these animals as they emerge from their dens, nests and hideaways at different times of the day. This makes it possible to see the widest variety without hindering the natural rhythms of the animals.

Thanks to the temperate climate and lushness of the area, Lalibela boasts no fewer than five ecosystems, each of which attracts a unique combination of birds and animals. These are made up of riverine forest, acacia woodland, fynbos, savannah grassland, and valley bushveld.

The Eastern Cape is a malaria-free zone, like many other parts of South Africa. As such, it is a great option for families with little ones or those that are susceptible to illness and cannot take anti-malarial prophylaxes.
