Itinerary

  1. DAY 1: Johannesburg to Haenertsburg

    You depart around 11h00 from Johannesburg and travel to Polokwane - a three hour drive. Later in the afternoon you will have time for your first bird viewing opportunity at Polokwane Game Reserve where a suitable spot will be identified.

    OVERNIGHT: Lodge accommodation

  2. DAY 2: Haenertsburg

    The morning session will focus on the Aloe Forest in the Polokwane Game Reserve. Birds you’re likely to encounter here are Southern Black Tit, Ashy Tit, Acacia Pied Barbet, Black-collared Barbet, Crested Barbet, Marico Flycatcher, Coqui Francolin, Natal Spurfowl, Marico Sunbird, Barred Wren-Warbler and Crimson-breasted Shrike. After the morning session you will have time for a light lunch where after you will depart for the Haenertsburg / Magoebaskloof area.

  3. DAY 3: Haenertsburg

    These two days will be utilised to explore the area which offers various birding hot spots and the agenda is left open for the group and guide to decide. Available birding spots include: Kudu’s Valley, Dap Naude Dam, Woodbush Forest, Swartbos Forest, Haenertsberg Grasslands and the Serala Birding Route. Birds to be expected in this area are Verreaux´s, Crowned and Long-crested Eagle, Lanner Falcon, Horus, Alpine and African Black Swift, Cape Rock Thrush, Mocking Cliff Chat, Olive Bush-Shrike, Shelley´s Francolin, Lazy Cisticola, African Green-Pigeon, Orange breasted Bush-Shrike, Purple-crested Turaco, Green capped Eremomela, White-throated Robin-Chat, African Fish Eagle, Great Egret, Purple Heron, various Indigobird and Firefinch species, Blue Swallows, Wailing-, Lazy-, Croaking-, Cloud- and Wing-snapping Cisticola, Grass Owl, White-necked Raven, Red-winged Francolin, Yellow Bishop, Dark-capped Yellow and Broad-tailed Warbler, Drakensberg Prinia, Cape Grassbird. Jackal Buzzard, Long-crested Eagle, Olive Bush-Shrike, African Olive-Pigeon, Cape Batis, Terrestrial Brownbul, Yellow-streaked Greenbul and Forest Canary.

  4. DAY 4: Haenertsburg
