About West Coast 3 Day Itinerary

Our suggestions for a self-drive, three day trip up the Cape West Coast with ideas on what to do and where to stay.

Did you know? Note that this is a suggested Three-day itinerary for the Cape West Coast – OUT of flower season.

Day One

Leave Cape Town via the R27 – there is a lot to do en route and day one is jam-packed. Look out for the Darling Wind Farm, something of a demonstration project – you cannot help but notice the four windmills close to the little town of Darling.

Before heading into Darling proper, stop off at !Khwattu, a San culture and education centre set in an 850 hectare nature reserve – a wonderful place to learn all about the West Coast's history. It also has a restaurant. Take in a show and dinner at Evita se Perron. Overnight at Darling accommodation.

Day Two

Take a slow drive through the West Coast National Park as an alternative route to reach the town of Langebaan. Spend the bulk of a sunny day here surrounded by kite surfers, fishermen, seafood and winding down to West Coast time.

Head off in the late afternoon to Velddrif at the mouth of the Berg River and overnight here, or at St Helena Bay, the largest bay in Africa. One of only three in the world where the sun both rises and sets, and which claims permanently calm seas (most of the time). See overnight options at Langebaan accommodation, Velddrif accommodation or St Helena Bay accommodation.

Day Three

Head into Paternoster and spend the day exploring one of the West Coast's most beautiful seaside villages. Filled with quaint, whitewashed homes, many of them still original fisherman's homes, the beach, the restaurants and the lifestyle have 'caught on' in quite a way with Capetonians, who make this their 'second home' over weekends and holidays.

There are plenty of gorgeous places to stay in Paternoster from hotels and luxury guest houses to holiday homes, and even the local corner café is something of a deli to cater for visitors. Overnight at Paternoster accommodation.
