The Cape Camino, like its counterpart in Spain, is a walking pilgrimage route around the Cape Peninsula.

It is a way to explore this magnificent part of the country on foot instead of through the windscreen of a car, and allows one to really get to know CapeTown in a totally different way.

Gabrielle Andrew, the Cape Camino's founder, sees it firstly as a way to support peace but also as a nation building project.

She speaks about three pivotal aspects to the Camino, which links sacred pilgrimage sites, incredible scenery, and the stories of the Cape's First People (the San and Khoi), the latter provided by a series of Camino guides.

Its route embraces Cape Town, divided into seven legs of about 20 km each that link the city bowl to Cape Point, crossing at Constantia Nek.

The route covers the peninsula in a figure of ∞ with Constantia Nek as the centre, sweeping south and north from there all the way to Cape Point in the south, and the city in the north.

The route in its entirety is seven days

But the Cape Camino is incredibly flexible. There are half day, and one and two day options to choose from. The route can be accommodated to suit anyone.

Camino guides know the route intimately and are available to walk the route with you. There are also optional porters if carrying a heavy bag is not your idea of fun.

Discounts along the way

Small business, restaurants and accommodation on the route have signed up as 'providers', offering pilgrims discounts. For instance: The Farmhouse restaurant offers a free coffee with breakfast, and Casa Labia 10% off a meal.

To organise your own package

Sign up on the website as a pilgrim (a once-off payment) and receive your infinity passport, maps, information on the sacred sites, discounts, and t-shirts, and then devise your own route.
