Kids in Cape Town

The Western Cape province of South Africa, with Cape Town as its capital, is no stranger to travellers with families. When it comes to entertaining the kids in Cape Town, one is spoilt for choice. The mother city alone holds a host of activities, both in and outdoors, like the Two Oceans Aquarium (with a wonderful child-friendly restaurant) at the V&A Waterfront, the Cape Peninsula National Park, the Planetarium at the South African Museum (great for older kids too), and the MTN ScienCentre and Ratanga Junction at Canal Walk. [cont.]

Countless child-friendly beaches offer hours of sand play, surfing, body surfing and swimming; flea markets abound, and certain restaurants and coffee shops, like the Noordhoek Farm Stall and the Barnyard in Tokai, cater specially for children by providing play areas and children's menus. Further afield, options include (but are not limited to) strawberry picking, in season, at farms like Mooiberge and Mountain Breeze between Stellenbosch and Somerset West; the Cango Caves are a huge attraction near Oudtshoorn, and botanical gardens, like the Harold Porter Gardens in Bettys Bay, provide wonderful picnic spots for lazy afternoons.

The West Coast National Park is an easy day trip from Cape Town and well worth it during the flower season. Other reserves that make wonderful family outings include the Bontebok National Park and the De Hoop Nature Reserve amongst others.

With regions like the Cape Winelands, the Breede River Valley, the Cape Overberg, the Whale Route and the West Coast; and some incredible towns like Stellenbosch, Swellendam and Hermanus, the Western Cape cannot fail to entice families with children of all ages to explore its boundaries.
