This is the terrain of the Addo Elephant Park and various Big Five game reserves. Towns such as Graaff Reinet, known as the ‘gem of the Karoo’, and Nieu Bethesda, home to Helen Martin’s Owl House, are set in the heart of the Karoo whilst Hogsback, on the slopes of the Amathole Mountains in the midst of Tolkienesque indigenous forest in a setting punctuated by waterfalls, makes the short journey inland worth the effort.
