Tanagra is a wine farm surrounded by vineyards, indigenous fynbos and mountains. It is located 4.5 km outside McGregor and adjoins the Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve. Relax under the magnificent old wild fig tree in the garden or at the pool, watch the birds, which are there in abundance, stroll along, swim or go fishing in the big dam, go for anything between a leisurely walk on the farm to a more serious hike in the adjoining Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve, go biking (various mountain bike trails available in the vicinity), explore McGregor or just sit with a good book and a glass of wine and chill out on your verandah on a lazy afternoon or relax under the amazing Karoo stars. AccommodationTanagra offers 5 units, 2 cottages (Garden Cottage and Hill Cottage), 2 apartments (Bottlebrush and Gumtree) and the Loft studio. Most units are located around the old historic Tanagra homestead and the boutique wine cellar. (The Hill Cottage sits in the midst of fynbos away from everything and everybody). All units have their own unique character, are tastefully furnished with the intention to provide a naturally elegant farm ambience (see e.g. stone structures, reed ceilings, carefully chosen equipment) and boast scenic views on mountains and/or dam. Please note that all units sleep 2 adults (exceptions possible for Loft studio and Gumtree Apartment on request). All units are let as either self-catering or B & B (the Hill Cottage, because of its distance to the main farm, is let as self-catering only). Garden Cottage Spacious and tastefully furnished one-bedroom cottage (sleeping 2 adults) situated close to the swimming pool while still providing privacy. Fully equipped separate kitchenette (gas hot plates), en-suite bathroom (toilet and shower), fireplace (indoors) and large private and covered verandah with inbuilt fireplace/braai and scenic views on the mountains. Bottlebrush and Gumtree apartments Two charming, spacious and tastefully furnished one-bedroom apartments (sleeping two adults each) as part of the large guest wing attached to the old Tanagra homestead. Wooden floor and high vault reed ceilings make these apartments light and airy. The kitchens are fully equipped (gas hot plates). Fireplaces (indoors). Private entrance and a private (and covered) verandah with scenic views on the mountains. En-suite bathrooms with electrical plugs (toilet, walk-in shower and bath in Bottlebrush; toilet and shower in Gumtree). Mobile braais available. Loft Studio Very spacious studio above the old Tanagra winery with adjoining large wooden and sunny deck providing scenic views over the mountains and the beautiful farm dam. En-suite bathroom (toilet and shower). Fully equipped kitchenette. Indoor fireplace. Hill Cottage Very private and romantic cosy cottage set amidst indigenous fynbos and overlooking the Tanagra vineyards with breathtaking views over the McGregor valley. Fully equipped one-bedroom cottage with large kitchenette area, open fireplace, en-suite bathroom (toilet, walk-in shower and bath). Private plunge pool with scenic views in valley. Large shaded verandah with fireplace/braai. ServiceYour hosts Anette and Robert will give you a warm and personal welcome and gladly show you the farm and introduce you to the Tanagra wines in private wine-tastings (see also ‘wine experience at Tanagra’ below). Guests have the choice between keeping privately to themselves (all units secure your privacy) or joining each other in the garden (and winery). The units are fully serviced every third day (for self-catering) or daily (for B & B). English and German spoken. BreakfastFor those opting for Bed & Breakfast accommodation, a sumptuous continental (German) breakfast will be served in the conservatory which is part of the old homestead on a long table with panoramic views on the mountains. Old historic sash windows give this room an ‘outdoor’ feeling, and on cooler days a fireplace keeps it warm. FacilitiesAll units have (unless indicated otherwise): • King-size beds (Queen bed in Hill Cottage) • Private patios / verandahs with scenic views • Open fireplaces (indoors) and outside braais • Fully equipped for self-catering: bed linen, bath towels, pool towels, and fully equipped kitchen • Coffee / tea facilities • Minibars • Heaters • Area information file • Units all non-smoking (though guests are of course welcome to smoke outside) • Private parking (undercover) • Swimming pool (with braai area) (private plunge pool at Hill Cottage) • Garden with sun loungers and deck chairs and featuring a magnificent old wild fig tree providing pleasant shade on hot summer’s days Please note that we deliberately did not equip the rooms with TV or radio to stress the peaceful and private character of your countryside escape. (Public TV is available at the Jack and Grapes Pub in McGregor to watch rugby or cricket matches with the locals). Wine experience at TanagraTanagra is a boutique wine cellar producing hand-crafted distinctive wines (mainly noble red wines) maturing in French oak. A small boutique distillery has been at work since December 2009, producing top-range European style Grappas and Eau de Vies. You are welcome to explore the vineyards and get personally introduced to the cellar and the Tanagra wines by the owners and your hosts Anette and Robert. Extended lunches under the magnificent wild fig tree at the old homestead can be arranged on request to give you a unique and easy-feeling wine-tasting experience (booking essential, minimum of four persons). |

DIRECTIONS: Tanagra is part of Route 62. It is located on the road from Robertson to McGregor (approx. 14km from Robertson and 4,5 km outside McGregor). Arriving from Robertson you will find the Tanagra entrance on the right hand side. From Cape Town Drive on the N1 for about one hour. Follow the signs for Worcester. In Worcester, follow the signs for Robertson on the R60. Arriving in Robertson turn right, direction McGregor. After 14 km, passing the Vrolykheid Nature Reserve, you will find our entrance on the right hand side (approx. 4.5 km before McGregor). From Oudtshoorn Follow the signs for R62 all the way to Montagu. In Montagu, follow the R60 Ashton-Robertson road to Robertson. Arriving in Robertson turn left, direction McGregor. After 14 km, passing the Vrolykheid Nature Reserve, you will find our entrance on the right hand side (approx. 4.5 km before McGregor). |
