DESCRIPTION:
Saint du Barrys Country Lodge is a 3 Star graded family owned and run Lodge, with six en-suite rooms, all opening to the garden the centre of which is a huge wild fig tree. This tree is well over a hundred years old, and gives the lodge its own ambience of peace and protection.
Saint du Barrys is situated at the foot of the Cedarberg in the historic town of Clanwilliam, 220 km from Cape Town, on the N7, the main road to Namibia. The coastal town of Lambert’s Bay is sixty kilometres to the west of Clanwilliam, and the Namibian border is 470 km to the north.
Overlooking an orange orchard, between the Olifants and Jan Dissels rivers, the air here is clean and clear, and the light has magical qualities.
Saint du Barrys is more than a B&B or guest-house: it is a home with a reputation for comfort, personal attention, friendliness and helpfulness. The Swiss and Scottish backgrounds of the hosts, Wally and Joan, create an atmosphere of cheerfulness and generosity and the friendly dogs and cats are at hand to create a home from home for guests who miss their pets. The parrot, Ramius the Red October, is capable of amusing an audience for hours.
Accommodation
Protected by a huge 150-year-old wild fig tree, Saint du Barrys is under thatch. The original homestead is over a hundred years old.
The bedrooms, all en-suite, have open rafters, and each bedroom has its own ambience and aroma of thatch. Bedrooms open onto the garden, close to the splash pool, and are large, each with its own attractive décor, generous seating area and linen of the finest quality.
Bedrooms have 6 channels of TV, air-conditioning and heating, tea, coffee and hot chocolate tray, gourmet rooibos experience, kettle, fridge, and hair dryer. Honey and rooibos toiletries are available in the bathrooms.
Breakfast
Jams, warm bread, fresh muffins, muesli, all home-made, contribute to a delightful breakfast.
Dining
Dinners which are by arrangement are an outstanding highlight of a visit to Saint du Barrys. Guests return regularly to enjoy Joan’s preparation of the freshest ingredients in ways that enhance their natural flavours. Having drinks on the patio or at the fish-pond in the late afternoon, watching the light change from gold to pink to dark-blue is a favourite past-time of guests. Saint du Barrys is fully licensed and good wines are available.
