In the Cedarberg, on the banks of the Doring River, Oudrif provides accommodation in stylish straw bale cottages, for people who relish peace and quiet and being close to nature. The pristine river provides ample opportunity for paddling, swimming, fishing and sun bathing on secluded beaches. (Recommended as a must see in The Rough Guide to South Africa, Lesotho & Swaziland Fourth Edition).
Local legend has it that when God was making the earth he had all the flower seeds in one pocket and accidentally let them fall out over Namaqualand. Since then, every winter, the area has played host to the largest wild flower display in the world.
Oudrif is situated on the unspoilt Doring River at the foothills of the Cedarberg in a transition zone between the Cedarberg, Karoo and Nama regions. This unique location has resulted in Oudrif being home to a stunning variety of fauna and flora, as well as a rich heritage of San rock art, Stone Age artefacts and fossils whose origins date back millions of years.
Oudrif provides accommodation in stylish straw bale cottages. The cottages are constructed using environmentally sound principles, including the use of timber from invasive trees, pre-used fittings and solar power for lights.
In keeping with the overwhelming sense of peace at Oudrif, it was decided that if the experience was to be shared with others, preservation of the heritage of the area was imperative. Therefore accommodation on the farm is limited to a maximum of 10 people at any one time. This not only ensures the serene contentment visitors deserve, but also limits the impact that people have on the sensitive environment.
Café style, fusion food and drinks are served in the boma or dining area, all contained in an area that has been kept as natural as possible. All in all, a good time is guaranteed. Oudrif caters for special dietary requirements.
Children & Pet Policy
No children under 14 years. No pets are allowed.
Activities & Attractions
For our active visitors, the Doring River provides opportunities for swimming, paddling, white-water rafting and fly-fishing in season as well as hiking, visiting San rock art sites, medicinal plants and birding. Hiking trails, mountain bike trails, the Olifants River Wine Route and 4x4 trails are all popular activities within the surrounding region.
Those seeking to detoxify from the stress of modern living will find the sparkling clear air, the pure silence, the secluded beaches and the low light levels at night are what makes Oudrif the ideal getaway for star gazing, sun bathing, soul searching and simply relaxing in splendid isolation in the heart of the African wilderness.
“ I have traveled extensively in Southern Africa and seldom come across Oudrif’s equal, at a place like Oudrif there will always be extra room for wonderment” New York Times 06 Feb 2005
