Local legend has it that when God was making the earth he had all the flower seeds in one pocket and accidentally let them fall out over Namaqualand. Since then, every winter, the area has played host to the largest wild flower display in the world. Oudrif is situated on the unspoilt Doring River at the foothills of the Cedarberg in a transition zone between the Cedarberg, Karoo and Nama regions. This unique location has resulted in Oudrif being home to a stunning variety of fauna and flora, as well as a rich heritage of San rock art, Stone Age artefacts and fossils whose origins date back millions of years. AccommodationOudrif provides accommodation in stylish straw bale cottages. The cottages are constructed using environmentally sound principles, including the use of timber from invasive trees, pre-used fittings and solar power for lights. In keeping with the overwhelming sense of peace at Oudrif, it was decided that if the experience was to be shared with others, preservation of the heritage of the area was imperative. Therefore accommodation on the farm is limited to a maximum of 10 people at any one time. This not only ensures the serene contentment visitors deserve, but also limits the impact that people have on the sensitive environment. DiningCafé style, fusion food and drinks are served in the boma or dining area, all contained in an area that has been kept as natural as possible. All in all, a good time is guaranteed. DIRECTIONS: Situated in the Northern Cedarberg on the banks of the Doring River. Oudrif is 50km north-west of Clanwilliam and as most roads are gravel we allow ± 1 hour for this trip. Clanwilliam is ± 250km from Cape Town on the N7 National road to Namibia and is a 2 to 2½ hour drive. A map of directions to Oudrif is supplied on receipt of booking. |
