Every room has its own private balcony. In the upstairs lounge area you can feast your eyes on the beautiful ocean, read a book from the library or watch TV. Downstairs you can relax, listen to classical music from a large CD selection or lounge in the beautiful garden area with the mountain right behind you. Agulhas Ocean Art House faces the sea and offers a splendid view of sunrise over the bay of Cape Agulhas and Struisbaai. The rear of the house looks on to a nature reserve and includes a small courtyard which offers an area of sunny calm and pleasant views on blustery days. On the premises is the Art Café. The option to dine in style with the dramatic Indian Ocean scenery adds to the distinct luxury of this boutique hotel. Attractions & ActivitiesHere, at the most southern tip of the African continent, nature is ruling the scenery in a most unbelievable fascination. You have to just let go and go with the flow. A walk to the “most southern tip” with a packed rucksack, along the cliff path, with thousands of shells, rock formations – formed through low and high tide, storms, sun and wind. If you can strip off life’s haste, you can watch the world of birds, sailing Seagulls, diving Cormorant, Lapwings, swarming Oryx weber birds, the noisy local Oystercatcher and last but not least a sun- bathing sea lion - and you will become an observer of this magnificent coast. Once you leave the southern tip, after a well-deserved little break – you will pass the shipwreck “Meisho Maru” after a kilometres walk - it was stranded in 1982. Just a few minutes by car from the Hotel, you will find the longest stretch of beach in the southern hemisphere. 24 km uninterrupted sandy beach, almost always deserted, invites you to stride along. An oceanic pleasure that will stay in your mind forever. Agulhas Lighthouse is the second oldest in South Africa and was built in 1948. It is one of three building influenced by Egyptian architecture. Today its hosting the lighthouse museum and a restaurant. Another suggestion would be a trip to “De Mond” Nature Reserve with the river mouth of the Heuningnes River that runs into the sea, accompanied with terrific dune landscape and magic bird life. You could also charter a boat to go out to sea. With a little luck you will find hundreds of dolphins and the feeling of our wavy rough seas. Where the two oceans meetThe southernmost point of the African continent attracts people from all over the world. Here where the Indian and Atlantic Ocean meet in a dramatic way, one has the feeling that time stands still. The picturesque harbor, the fishermen appear like living sculptures along the coast, the vast expanses of sandy beach, the bold paths along the rugged stone cliffs, the cormorants that stay pleasurable in raging seas are only snapshots, randomly strung together. It needs a little imagination and above all reflection to capture the importance and fascination of the southernmost point of the African continent. The intercontinental travel activities are as new as the Internet and globalization in general. Rusting shipwrecks such as the Meisho Maru (stranded 1982) attest to the fact that it was dangerous at former times to circumnavigate the African continent. A trip to South Africa was equally troublesome. South Pole, North Pole, the Amazon, the Sahara, Tierra del Fuego, and last but not least the end of the African continent are still destinations that have a huge mental significance. L'Agulhas and the "southernmost point of Africa" are so modest - not a great monument, not a souvenir trap. Perhaps this is something special and typical of the mentality of this region. |
