Montagu

Montagu lies nestled between two mountain ranges halfway between Cape Town and the Garden Route, on the legendary Route 62, with crystal clear air, free of any pollution. The weather is perfect…far enough South to escape the heat of the Karoo, far enough North to get away from the long wet winters of the Cape.

The Robertson Wine Route just outside Montagu offers a diversity of estates ranging from incredible Cape Dutch Homestreads to informal boutique vineyards in the most beautiful gardens with history attached to every tree planted. This wine route is best known throughout the world as the Wine Route with gardens alongside the road as far as you drive - an attraction in its own right.

From Montagu there are a variety of footpaths to choose from. Lover’s Walk being ideal for an early morning stroll, especially with the tortoises, dassies, guiniefowl, Egyptian geese, and the odd baboon or small buck that shows itself. Montagu is well known as a rock climbing destination.

Niel Burger’s tractor ride up the Langeberg, and the optional potjie that goes with it is a must. Downhill cycling is a vitalizing experience to bring even a tired heart to pump adrenaline. Then there are the famous Hot Springs for those who suffer from ailments such as arthritis and rheumatism. Most other aches and pains will find the warm waters most beneficial. The Montagu holiday world can best be described as the oasis of the Cape.

The magic of this area is its wonderful dry healthy climate, nature walks, 4X4 routes, cycling, top cuisine and for those who like country living – one can use the Breërivier Winelands as the base from where one can visit Cape Town and the whole of the Western Cape.

Route 62

Route 62 is the historical route, which was the main link between Cape Town, the Garden Route and Port Elizabeth before the N2 highway was built. It is not only offers a 70 km shorter option between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn, but also runs through the most beautiful mountain passes, alternated by typical Klein Karoo vegetation, vineyards and fruit orchards. It passes through 14 beautifully preserved villages where time has stood still for 40 years. Most tourists would prefer to drive this picturesque road instead of a National Highway. Indeed “Route 62” does not have to stand back for it’s legendary and by now world famous sister, Route 66, in the USA.
