DESCRIPTION:

With beautiful views over the ocean, two comfortable rooms and tranquillity in a garden setting, Inkwazi Lodge is an ideal base to explore Hermanus and the mountains of the Overberg. An owner-run establishment, Inkwazi is only 150 metres from the sea and a short drive from excellent restaurants, fabulous wine estates, the best whale watching spots and a nature reserve.

Accommodation

The two charming en suite rooms (shower only) have private entrances. Both are airy, with exceptionally comfortable queen-size beds and pure wool duvets. An adjoining TV lounge offers the convenience of a sleeper couch.

Your hosts, Trudy and Derrick, offer legendary continental and farmhouse breakfasts, but light self-catering is an easy option. There is a patio with a braai and comfortable seating, as well as a bar-fridge, kettle microwave and toaster.

Each room is equipped with a hairdryer, wall panel heater, electric blanket for chilly winter nights and a clock radio. A laundry facility is also available. Inkwazi also offers secure parking and a pleasant garden.

Special features

There is an upstairs sea view lounge and gallery (owner Derrick paints boats and aeroplanes) offering whale spotting opportunities and an honesty bar.

For first time visitors to Hermanus, your hosts are happy to take you on a complimentary orientation tour, highlighting the best restaurants, best beaches, (two Blue Flag beaches), best walks and hikes, and best whale watching spots in season (July through November).

Attractions & Activities

Hermanus is famous for offering the finest land-based whale-watching in the world. You could even paddle out to them in a kayak. But within minutes, you could also be exploring some of South Africa’s best wine estates. Some of the better-known include Hamilton Russell, Bouchard Finlayson, Newton Johnson and Sumaridge.

The Fernkloof Nature Reserve is situated in the mountains overlooking Hermanus, and is one of the greatest showpieces of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Two top golf courses - Arabella Golf Estate and the delightful Hermanus Golf Club - are close by.

Ask your hosts about horse riding, rock and fly fishing, deep sea fishing, scuba diving, 4 x 4 trails and quad biking. Or for something more relaxing, talcum white beaches, a lagoon, or a sunset cruise and an opportunity to see dolphins and seals.

A short drive away

Within an hour you could be in Gansbaai, which has the best Great White Shark viewing and diving opportunities in the world. You’ll also be able to see Dyer Island, home to scores of penguins and rocky outcrops full of seals. This is also close to the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas, and a chance to straddle two oceans.

While you’re there, visit the Bontebok National Park outside Swellendam (third oldest town in South Africa) or head for the charming fishing village of Arniston. Look out for elegant blue cranes along the way, and fascinating farm stalls.

Drive in another direction and you’ll find yourself in Betty's Bay, close to the exquisite Harold Porter Botanical Gardens. Don’t forget to visit this town’s delightful colony of African Penguins.
