Wartburg Accommodation / Wartburger Hof Hotel Pietermaritzburg Hotel / Hotel in Pietermaritzburg

25 minutes drive from Pietermaritzburg and 1 hour from Ballito you will find a treasure in the village of Wartburg. An alpine chalet - style German hotel, the Wartburger Hof Hotel. Wartburg is situated in the beautiful KwaZulu Natal Midlands, surrounded by rolling hills of sugar cane, maize and timber.

The village was established in 1881 by German missionaries. The Wartburger Hof Hotel was built in 1984. Window boxes filled with blossoms and the beautiful park-like garden with a duck-pond create an inviting and welcome atmosphere. The reception area and lounge are enhanced by antique furniture, hand woven carpets and a large fireplace. This cosy atmosphere invites you to put up your feet and enjoy a glass of “Glühwein”.

ACCOMMODATION

A striking yellow wood staircase leads to the comfortable plush bed rooms en-suite. Our total 20 rooms, named after towns in Germany, all have radio, TV, video, telephone and hairdryer. The rooms have either a balcony, terrace or a small living room. The owners gladly accommodate families in the executive cottages, which both have several bedrooms, private bathrooms and a living room.

LEISURE

Relax at the pool or enjoy the steam bath. There is a golf driving range, beach volleyball and croquet facilities on the premises. The cosy tavern in the cellar is a popular meeting place for guests and locals alike. Here they can enjoy a drink, play snooker, darts or order a delicious pub meal. In the elegant ladies bar guests can enjoy a drink before their meal. The selection of imported beers from Germany, Austria and Belgium make out to be an absolute “beer fest”!

RESTAURANTS

The Wartburger Hof Hotel also has two outstanding restaurants providing a good choice and quality of cuisine. The more formal dining room (A la Carte) caters for those special occasions. The “Weinstube” with its rustic atmosphere is the ideal spot if you prefer to wine and dine in more informal surroundings. The international a la carte menu has a distinct German flavour. It’s not just the locals who enjoy the German hospitality - the hotel is frequented by the same businessmen year after year. Many of them are attracted by the delicious German dishes such as “Eisbein”, “Schnitzel” and “Schwäbischer Rostbraten”. All the wines are selected by Siggie himself. His private collection is quite remarkable.

This hostelry must be one of the few that actually allows guests into the kitchen, it is not forbidden territory as in many similar establishments. Siggie, has a masters degree in confectionery from a school in Berlin and Ingrid originally qualified as a Kindergarten teacher. Their son Chris, has a German Hotel Diploma. Since their immigration to South Africa, they have clocked up 29 years in the hotel and restaurant industry. That is why they were more than able to tackle the Wartburger Hof Hotel when they bought it in 1991!

CONFERENCES

The fully equipped "Hindenburg" conference room is any conference organisers dream. In such surroundings you can be assured of delighted delegates. The "Hindenburg" seats up to 35 people (U-shape), 45 people (schoolroom style) and 70 people (cinema style). For small think-tanks there is a board room with private bar facilities. The towering lounge area is suitable for functions and wedding receptions for up to 200 people. Beer fests and music recitals are also held regularly.

ATTRACTIONS

Recreational facilities in the village include bowls, tennis, 9 holes golf and scenic walks. The Albert Falls nature reserve offers fishing, watersports and hiking. Ask your host to drive you to the Valley of 1000 hills, “Devils Slit” and “Peters Gorge”. Here you will enjoy breathtaking views over green hills and dales. Within an hours drive you will also reach the sunny coast for a swim or just to relax on the beach.

The Wartburger Hof Hotel is clearly the main feature in the unusual village of Wartburg. 70% of the community still speak German, making it very popular for overseas visitors as they regard it as a ‘home from home’.

Treat yourself and your family to a piece of Germany in South Africa. Allow the Schädle family and staff to spoil you. They are looking forward to welcoming you and offer lots of “Gemütlichkeit” and good service.
