About Umzimvubu Retreat

Umzimvubu Retreat is situated on densely forested dunes on First Beach, overlooking the Umzimvubu River Mouth and Indian Ocean within comfortable walking distance from the town center.

We guarantee unmistakable South African hospitality ... whether for a holiday, business trip or just passing by, we pledge satisfaction, value for money and fond memories. Experience the incredible scenic beauty of the Wild Coast. Umzimvubu Retreat has been beautifully restored. The woodwork finish extends a subtle charm to the warm atmosphere.

The guestrooms are spotlessly clean and comfortably equipped. All rooms have TV's, tea / coffee and ceiling fans. Limited DStv is available. Selected rooms are available where children are able to share with parents at a minimal rate.

The honeymoon suite is enormous and offers all required amenities with awe inspiring views (even from the bathroom). The majority of the rooms have excellent views (you can actually watch whales from your room!) and have private entrances and patios where one can relax and enjoy the scenery and abundant birdlife, lulled by the sounds of the ocean.

Gigantic breakfasts are served daily in true South African tradition, the selections regularly being varied & as a rule including fresh fruit salad, yoghurts and cereals. Select from cappuccino, latte or espresso at the coffee station or enjoy a lovely cup of tea. A nice touch is that coffee and homemade biscuits/rusks are on hand at all times for guests who become peckish.

Enjoy the friendly atmosphere and fine dining at what is arguably the best food in town right at the guesthouse. Set-menu options are traditional SA cooking - all food are prepared freshly on site. A selection of wines is available. Dinner by Appointment Only.

Overall the dining room has an aura of understated elegance and sophistication without being overly formal. The prompt, friendly service provided by the hosts adds to the cosy atmosphere, making dinner a relaxed, memorable experience.

Port St. Johns is situated halfway between East London and Durban, on the Wild Coast (Transkei). The coast of the old Transkei (now part of the Eastern Cape Province) is known as the Wild Coast. Exploring the Wild Coast is a delight for the nomad. There are lagoons, cliffs, palm trees, arum lilies, sandy bays and rivers reaching the sea in deep valleys, many of them finding their way through the hills in incredibly involved convolutions. The road to any coastal point leads through unforgettable scenery, offering innumerable interesting glimpses of the way of life of a people living in a manner totally different from that of Europe or Asia.

Few people visit Port St. Johns without being captivated. It is an easy-going place where formal dress is unknown. There is little doubt that together with its surroundings, it is a Paradise, be it for the artist, photographer, naturalist, botanist, or for those just seeking pease and relaxation. It is a lovable, unspoilt “destination”, with no pretence of being anything else.

There are three superb beaches, several rocky headlands, boating up the river and many paths leading through the forest to scenic spots. The climate is perfect for holidays all year round, with sea temperatures high enough for even mid-winter bathing. Fruit like banana, paw-paw, mango, litchi & avocado, which are grown in the river valley, are sold at roadside stalls. Craft such as beadwork, baskets and walking sticks, made by locals are also available to purchase.

4x4 trails; mountain biking; rock and surf angling; surfing; swimming; canoeing; cultural tours; day trip to waterfalls; birdwatching; hiking; horse riding nearby; golfing nearby; restaurants and bars nearby.
