ActivitiesThere are opportunities to taste local wines on a horse back tour, a visit to many Wine Estates, with the famous Boschendal always a favourite, Chamonix, Dieu Donne, Cabriere, Mont Rochelle, Moreson, La Motte and Plaisir de Merle but to mention a few. Golf is available at Pearl Valley and Boschenmeer. The ocean is a 45 min drive, Stellenbosch and Paarl 20 minutes, Cape Town is a scenic one hour drive. Hiking and walks at Cape Nature Fynbos Reserve - Mont Rochelle on the Franschhoek mountain pass. Bicycles can be hired in the village. FranschoekFranschhoek was originally named Oliphantshoek, meaning Place of Elephants, due to the fact that Elephant cows would come over the mountain pass to calf and rear their young in the early settler days. Some of the Huguenots who escaped the persecution in France during the late 17th century, were given farms in the Oliphantshoek area, with nine being allocated by Governor Simon van der Stel in 1694.
