Photographs cannot do this place justice. Stunning views from every window with an amazing feeling of isolation and peace. The units offer everything you could need and Gavin was more than happy to go out of his way to make sure our stay was everything we wished for.
This lodge is not for everyone! If you like trampolines, quad bikes and busy places you had better book elsewhere. But if you do like a remote, quiet and peaceful location with just the views to keep you busy - then book here immediately! Oh and of course the most stunning hikes starting from your front door. Gavin has about 4 well marked trails from 45 min to 3 or 4 hours that will pass your time while not staring at the scenery, reading or sleeping. You must do the red trail which is well marked and will take you high up into the mountain with the most stunning views of the Drakensberg and the Amphitheatre. The units are very spacious, clean and well maintained and we would rate the self catering thatched chalets the best place we have stayed in in the Drakesnberg.
My wife and I spent a few days at Toplodge for our honeymoon. Our expectations were exceeded in every way. Perfect for a couple or family looking for a relaxing, secluded, scenic stay in the mountains! The scenery is breathtaking and everything is totally unspoiled. You can even drink from the streams on the beautiful trails! The honeymoon suite (the best of the three IMO) is lovely - well furnished and positioned. The suite has a quaint "lodgey" feel to it. Gavin and his wife are Top hosts!
These three cabins are absolutely incredible. They're hard to get to because of the character of the road but they're well worth the drive if you've got the vehicle for it or make an arrangement with hospitable proprietor Gavin. The isolation inherent in the rougher terrain means a sense of unparalleled serenity. The view is different every time of the day as the clouds and sun rearrange themselves casting new and different light on the Northern Bergs and the foothills that give way to the Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls - the constant is that the setting is always incredible.
This is the 2nd time we have visited Toplodge and we once again had a fantastic time. Privacy and seclusion are the order of the day at these cosy and well equipped chalets which are at the very end of the road high up in the mountains. There is nothing close by that could possibly disturb you. Fantastic service by the staff. We will definitely be back!
Our stay at Toplodge was a great experience. The remoteness of the cottages and the fact that it only accessible by 4x4, make it the ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of day to day life. The hosts, Gavin and Jean, we're very welcoming and very helpful. There are many hikes on the property as well as a lovely dam for swimming on a hot summers day! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to returning some day!
Just the type of break we needed to restore the mind and soul. On a remote track, away from the usual Christmas bustle, our 5 nights and days at Toplodge were idyllic and peaceful. Our comfortable cottage exceeded expectations and proved super cosy on rainy days - so atmospheric high up amongst the whirling clouds and mist! A day hike in the nearby Royal Natal National Park was a bonus, the Sugarbush Trail on the Toplodge farm coming a close second. I'm so glad we found this idyllic place!
Nestled away in the berg, at the end of an amazing 4x4 dirt road, you will find this gem of a getaway. Toplodge offers peace and relaxation in their beautiful and comfy lodges. With Gavin as a wonderful, and unobtrusive host, this was a stay to remember, and one we would soon like to experience again. From watching the sunrise to having a sundowner at the dam, listening to the frogs and birds; complete relaxation was found. If you are passionate about the Drakensberg; Toplodge is definitely a place you want to visit.
This was our second trip to Top Lodge and it was as brilliant as the first time. The cottage had everything that we required for a few days of pure relaxtion. We had previously been with friends and we had lovely weather and we did most of the walks which were all well marked and documented. This time, it was just the two of us and the weather was just what we needed - rainy and misty - watching the lightning in the distance was special.
Fantastic getaway with perfect hosts - Gavin and Joan are lovely people who have catered for everything that you could want.
Can't wait to return next year and stay in the new cottage that has just been built.
Many thanks to Gavin for a great weekend in the lodge - what a perfect place: arriving in the dark on a road which makes every Land Rover enthusiast smile, the lodge awaited us with warm lights in the middle of the dark mountain, with a great, cosy fire place as well as the outdoor braai. Waking up the next morning, we discovered the amazing landscape around it - with a great variety of hikes around it and stunning views in the lodge. The lodge is also in a great place to explore the surrounding attractions, such as the amphitheatre hikes and other parts of the Drakensberg. Gavin is a great host and made the stay even more memorable. I could not recommend the Toplodge more to anyone who wants a relaxed, quiet holiday in one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa.
A perfect place to unwind and relax, beautiful scenery and excellent walks from easy to challenging. The forest walk and the gorge walk were our favourite. The cottage is cosy, comfy, and clean and has everything you need. Gavin and Joan are the perfect hosts and they make sure you have all that you may need. It was a cold wet weekend for us but its didn't matter because the fire place warmed up the whole cottage.
We will defiantly be back.
We take regular breaks all over the country and have stayed in beautiful spaces and places, but we've never experienced anything as peaceful, picturesque, remote and quiet as Toplodge. Its the perfect getaway if you're looking to relax and recharge. Nestled high up in the mountains just below the Amphitheatre, the thatched accommodation is fantastic and affordable, and Gavin is a wonderful and unobtrusive host. A hiker's paradise- We can't wait to get back for another stay!
We visited TopLodge for the 2nd time from 30 August to 01 September 2013. TopLodge is truly an amazing getaway, a place to forget about the hustle and bustle of city living. The cottages are in immaculate condition, with everything one could require on hand. Gavin is an amazing host and has really gone out of his way to make TopLodge a superb place to relax and unwind. There is also plenty to do in the area - walks, mountain biking, fishing. I would recommend TopLodge to anyone and our December trip back is already booked.
Wow! what a wonderful holiday. Great place to get get away and relax. Lovely cottages, great hikes and spectacular views of the berg! We will be back!!
This is is God's backyard! If you are looking for complete peace and quiet then this is just the spot to head to. Fabulous hikes, the cottage felt like home from the moment we arrived and we woke up to the most incredible views each morning. Couldn't have asked for more! Thank you!!
If you want to have a rest from work and fuss of a big city - that is a place to go. Want to talk with you family and spend time with them and not be disturbed - that is a place to go. Great views and hikes. And nobody around.
Peaceful, quiet, remote and comfortable. Just a perfect getaway from it all and chill location in the Berg. Simply but tastefully furnished... couldn't have wished for more
What a wonderful place to spend a 3 night break away. We had a joyful time with our two sons age 24/21, went on the well marked hikes, enjoyed the magnificent views, lazed in the sun on the well kept lawn, drank and ate all the nice stuff we brought along. Gavin is a superb host who picked us up in his 4x4, what a way to start!!! We experienced a thunderstorm like we had never seen before, such force of nature. All in all a great place to experience Africa,
What a great place, peaceful, beautiful. The accommodation is perfect, clean. All you need is provided. Gavin was very helpful and kind. We will be back. No doubt about that.
Everything for a great holiday with the family and friends is there: two super lodges, hiking trails, a dam with tubes, swing and fishing rods, a stunning view into the valley and the Berg. And most important: a very warm welcome by the owners. It is a different world up there!
My partner and I stayed at Toplodge for 3 days this week and had the most wonderful time we can remember. The lodge cottages are immaculate and beautiful. The fireplace is wonderful with a bottle of red wine. The silence and views are breathtaking. Gavin is the most friendly and interesting host I have ever had anywhere I remember staying. All in all I cannot recommend it highly enough if you are looking for a (literally) get-away-from-it-all vacation break. We are already planning when to go back for another visit.
To me this accommodation must rate as one of the best self catering venues that I have ever visited. NOTHING can beat this place for relaxation and just doing what you want do. There are good hiking trails and the bird life is absolutely magnificent. Also, a few buck, jackal and baboons are what was available for us to view. The absolute best thing for me was that there was NO TELEVISION! (Please do NOT change this as it will ruin the peace and solitude)! Host and Hostess, Gavin and Joan are extraordinary people. Both are extremely knowledgeable about most aspects of the area. Visitors are warned that if you do not have a 4 x 4 you are advised to request Gavin to come and collect you form the nearby local resort. BELIEVE ME, do not attempt this journey in a SUV - it will not work! Gavin is MORE than happy to come and collect you - WAY TO GO!
Well what can I say other than absolutely fabulous! Starting at the access road - nice 4x4 excursion just to get you to understand that you are now out in nature - away from the hustle and the bustle of the city. Gavin please do not change your access route - this is part of the trip and what lies in front of one. The hosts - Gavin and Joan. Great English SA folk that understand the word privacy and service delivery. They were very attentive and willing to assist in any way possible. They also have a great knowledge of the local area as well as the wild life. The accomodation was spectacular and if you truly want more than this; then go and stay in a 5 star hotel and pay the related prices. The unit was sparkling clean and neat with everything needed to be self sufficient. Beautifully set up with great views of the surrounding mountains. I suppose the test of any vacation spot will always be; would you go back there again? In the case of TopLodge- yes in a heartbeat. Thank you Safarinow and Gavin for your assistance and a wonderful weekend.
Now we clearly understand why the name of this lodge has been called "Toplodge" because everything is "Top"! The houses itself, the hospitality of the owner, the location, the scenery, the view, the completeness of the equipment and the clearly marked hiking-trails are all fantastic. For sure we will come back. We stayed over in the Toplodge from September 29 till October 03. Giny and Ted Posthumus from Maseru, Lesotho/the Netherlands.
We booked at Toplodge and it was one of the best times we ever had! Amazing views, quiet time away from it all! Gavin was an excellent host and contributed to our special time. The cottage was very neat and clean and had everything we needed, even a nice cozy fireplace. We really enjoyed this special time as a family - walking in the mountain. The kids enjoyed being themselves and going "back-to-nature".
All the comforts of civilisation and all the joys of nature! We stayed in a spotless cottage, with a well-equipped kitchen, a well-constructed fireplace and a comfortable bed - and a nice hot shower. There are only two cottages (with a third being built), and the access road needs a Land Rover (Gavin, the owner, came and fetched us from Alpine Heath in his), so you feel splendidly isolated. Should you need anything, or need to go anywhere, however, Gavin is just a phone call away. The views are lovely, and we took our time with various short walks and hikes, taking over 1 000 photos in just four and a bit days. All we had to worry about was whether the eggs should be fried or scrambled. We returned home completely relaxed and ready to go back to Toplodge as soon as we get the chance.
We very much enjoyed using this as a base for our day visits to the Royal Natal National Park.
Gavin was very welcoming and helpful. He happily gave us rides to and from the Alpine Heath resort where our (two wheel drive) vehicle was parked. This made it easy for us to maximize our time at RNNP (and to watch the rugby from Alpine Heath!). Returning in the evenings we enjoyed the stunning views from the warmth of our cottage. We also had the opportunity to try one of the short hikes around the property and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful scenery.
I want to say thank you to TopLodge for showing me what it means to be in heaven for a few days. the hospitality, facilities and peace that we experienced there was truly Amazing! the trails are spectacular, the cottage immaculate!
.this is the place to be - Top Lodge is simple surrounded by lovely mountain views. Quiet and secluded as it is only accessible to residents only and also due to the difficult route getting up there, it is ideal for those looking for complete privacy and tranquility.
The cottage is not a 'basic' cottage - it has a well equipped kitchen as well as an outdoor braai. The bedding is of good quality. The host, Gavin, has also thoughtfully provided a set of quilt if one wishes to lis outside on the grass, just to enjoy being outdoors. And when it gets chiilly outside, the fireplace and ample firewood will make it warm and cosyinside.
There are many easy short hikes to enjoy around the area without having to venture further. We enclose some pics of the views around the cottage. And if you are interested to venture further, the Royal Natal National Park is just 15 mins drive away. There, you can attempt the famous Gorge Walk which only takes 5 hours, and is manageable if you leave the cottage early in the day. We also drove to the Sentinel Peak and did a short hike to enjoy the views of the Drakensberg Mountain. Gavin is always so kind and obliging to accommodate our requests to pick us up and drop us back to the cottage; and was very flexible in the timings too.
We would love to stay here again if we come back to this part of South Africa during our travels.
We booked 4 days at Toplodge but we liked it so much we extended our stay.
The setting is absolutely stunning with incredible views and amazing walks right on the doorstep. The walks are all outlined in a book that Gavin (the owner) put together. You can do short ½ hour walks that take you past rock pools and waterfalls or longer 2 hour walks that give you more breathtaking views of the area, if you want, you can leave the paths and go ‘off-road’ which is also a lot of fun.
The cottage we stayed in was beautiful, it really fits in with the environment and is very comfortable and well laid out. There is an open fire in the sitting area and of course a brai (BBQ) if you fancy cooking outside (which you will). There is also a dam near the cottage, you can fish in it, although we just sat next to it in the evening with some drinks.
We didn’t see another person while we were there. The cottage is so secluded it is only accessible by 4x4 and the only people who use the track are guests of Toplodge so it is incredibly tranquil. However you never feel cut off as Gavin always offers to drive you down the track to Alpine Heath if you need a shop.
I’ve mentioned him a few times already but Gavin the owner is extremely hospitable and makes you feel welcome from the start. He puts a big emphasis on relaxing and is very unobtrusive – he just leaves you to get on with things.
If you want to relax in / walk through some of the best scenery South Africa has to offer (out of the bits I’ve seen!), then I can not recommend Toplodge highly enough – we’ll be going back.
my wife and me spend a bit more than a week at this wonderful and secluded location . it`s been a really unique experience due to the fact that we really loved the very special place : wonderful views, no traffic at all and "instant access" to the nature of south africa. just put on your hiking shoes and go out to watch lots of birds and animals ... we even spotted some which we`ve never seen ever before in the wilderness (eland, brown hyena)! the cozy cottage and it`s green lawn had been a unique place to relax, to read a book and to get just far far away from the daily stress of civilization! if you like to be a bit off the beaten path and to enjoy a personal atmosphere .. for those who don`t love to stay in a hotel with lot`s of other people/tourists I honestly would like to recommend this lovely place!
We had a wonderful time at Toplodge!
Our cottage was lovely and very comfortable (very cosy beds), the isolated location and the view were amazing. We had a braai on the grassy terrace, then the next morning watched a beautiful sunrise over the valley. We also enjoyed the forest walks around the property, and the 20-minutes' off-road driving from Alpine Heath was a lot of bumpy fun (and a very good training for our trip to Lesotho)!
Gavin and Joan are fantastic hosts, very friendy and hospitable. They'll kindly pick you up and drop you off at Alpine Heath if you need. From there you'll be just half an hour away from Tugela Gorge.
We'll definitely stay there again if we go back to South Africa!
Hier gaan wij zeker terugkomen.
Wow, total relaxation at this wonderful luxury cottage in the middle of the mountains! It takes some effort to get there but it's totally worth it! Beautiful hikes in the area and pure relaxation during your stay. Magnificent views from every angle of the cottage. A must-go on your trip to Drakensberg.
Everything is great at Toplodge. The wonderful view (beautiful sunrise), the very kind and hospitable hosts, Gavin and Joan, the lovely and comfortable cottages (very cozy beds), the walks around the property - even the off-road driving from Alpine Heath was a fantastic preview for our trip to Lesotho! We'll definitely stay there again if we ever go back to South Africa!
We loved every second we spent at TopLodge. The cottages are spacious and well designed and the inside fireplace was a wonderful treat at night. There are only two cottages at TopLodge which ensures your privacy and lets you unwind in peace. The 4x4 drive to get to TopLodge is an adventure on it's own and adds to the overall appeal of the place. The views and marked routes in the area are amazing. Gavin is the perfect host and is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We'll definitely be back in winter, to see the snow.
Our two nights at Toplodge were very relaxing, peaceful and comfortable. It was great to get away from "the madding crowd" and enjoy the beauty of God's creation - even the awe-inspiring thunderstorms! We were only able to enjoy one walk because of the rainy weather, unfortunately.
We had a very relaxing and quiet weekend and recharged our tired souls! Accommodation was extremely clean and everything was in perfect working order. Loved the double-ply toilet paper and hot shower! Never mind the awesome views and great fireplace! Gavin was extremely friendly and very helpful and we could not ask for a better host! We will be back, Toplodge!
We loved everything about Toplodge. The beautiful and cosy accommodation, the magnificent surrounds, the fun hiking trails and the hospitality. Toplodge is the perfect weekend getaway.
We had a lovely weekend at Toplodge - the accommodation was spacious, clean and well equipped. We enjoyed the lovely big fireplace inside, the walks and fishing, and especially the swing!
TopLodge's unprecedented location and beauty is only rivalled by its owner, Gavin's, intimate knowledge of and consummate passion for the area, which he generously shares. The two units are private and planned with guests' need for peace in mind. The units are well equipped and cater for all needs with electrical appliances like microwaves and a large fireplace that serves as a reminder of the lodge's remoteness. Spending time at TopLodgeis a privilege - and, dare I say - a life altering experience.
We had a wonderful stay at TopLodge-perfect for two adults and two kids who want to escape the bustle of the rest of the world!
Beautiful and peaceful. Will come again.
Absolutely stunning place with magnificent views and peace for the soul. Quiet place with great hiking routes.
Over the past four years I have stayed in 10 different places booked through safarinow. This is, without doubt, the best. The building itself it well designed and comfortable (I'm stealing the idea for a fireplace in a corner rather than in the middle of the wall). Everything worked and was well maintained. The location is stunning. The photos here do not do it justice, and the peace and quiet very welcome. Gavin was supremely helpful and was willing to come and pick us up and drive us down to Alpine Heath so that we could watch the football. The only thing that was missing was snow, so I will be looking to book this wonderful place again next year and hope for some of the white stuff. Seriously, if you are looking for a quiet, romantic, getaway, look no further.
Gavin made us feel at home straight away. Very romantic and upmarket! Had that fireplace going the whole time. The trip from Alpine Heath up the mountain was fun in itself!!! Highly recommended!
We were made to feel most welcome by our host, Gavin. The quiet and serenity of TopLodge was just what we all needed. We enjoyed the hikes and dam. A totally enjoyable experience which left us feeling refreshed and at peace.
Absolutely Fantastic Getaway ! A quick drive from Jo'burg and we were at Heavens door. We spent 5 days of sheer bliss and much needed peace and quiet on this magnificent farm in the mountains. The accommodation was way more than we expected, so quaint, cosy and very comfortable - beautifully decorated! The views from TopLodgeare spectacular and we spent hours staring out into the vast valley. Our host Gavin was exceptional and there was nothing he wouldn't do for us to make our stay that much more special. There was loads to do from fishing and swimming in the dam, hiking to the waterfalls, taking long walks through the forests or just sitting in front of the fire with a glass of red wine. We had the most awesome time and would recommend to all young and old to definitely do themselves a favour and take a trip to remember to TopLodge. Regards Pete and Kate Ellison
I cannot recommend TopLodge highly enough - it's definitely in the Top 5 places we've stayed at around the world! My partner and I requested Gavin to do something romantic for our stay, and the red wine, rose petals and chocolates were absolutely wonderful. The walks on the mountain are INCREDIBLE, and the lady who cleaned our cottage, Lucy, is warm, friendly and very professional. Thanks - you'll see us again!
We went to Toplodge for a complete break from the big city and chaos that comes with it - it was fantastic. The location is beautiful, secluded and private and the perfect answer for some downtime and getting down to earth! we felt safe and secure and our young children loved the freedom to explore the beautiful farm. The trails were lovely, accommodation quaint and beautifully built, using lots of natural elements but very comfortable and cosy. We will definitely return soon.
The peace and quiet is an absolute blessing . The cottages are a haven of peace and quiet. Definitely a place on our list to revisit soon.
