To say our impression was fair is probably quite accurate but having stayed in other 5 star establishments during the course of our holiday, we would have awarded the Sands a 3 star rating.
The position of the hotel was good, but we were struck on arrival by the fact that the accommodation was not up to the standard of others we had visited and our bedroom was distinctly grubby - the shower in particular needed a good cleaning - and everywhere felt slightly tacky to the touch.
So far, pretty indifferent - but then on our second night, there was a knock on the door and we were informed there would be no food that night ! We were only on a bed and breakfast basis but had eaten in the previous night (food ok - certainly not 5 star standard) and were planning on eating in again. We therefore had to make speedy arrangements to go out and there was no manager in attendance to speak to.
We had by this time asked to be transferred to another hotel and this was arranged with no trouble, and we moved to Port Elizabeth to a sister hotel of the Sands which was much better. |

Phenomenal!
That you can expect 5 star luxury is a given, but it has a personal touch that makes the stay that much more enjoyable. As there are only 5 rooms you are assured of personal attention by the management.
My husband and I stayed for 7 days and the accommodation was just perfect. The chef must be complemented for the best meals we enjoyed throughout our stay. We enjoyed a few chilly days from the warmth of our lounge area with great sea views.
We had decided to sleep in one morning rather than go out to breakfast and later we received a call from our hostess, Heidi, to find out whether we would like breakfast delivered to our room instead. Every effort is made to ensure that their guests enjoy their stay to the maximum.
The Sands @ St Francis has such a feeling of warmth and it really like having a place at the beach with all the benefits of a full service hotel. |
