Patiently restored and imaginatively designed, this most special guest house offers the weary traveller a private yet homely retreat in the heart of vibrant Melville, the arts and culture hothouse of Johannesburg. The four airy rooms are styled simply yet elegantly, with heavenly beds and sumptuous en-suite bathrooms. Bubble bath is provided. Welcome to The Hillside House - you won’t believe the view from up here. As the name suggests The Hillside House is a double storey dwelling situated on a hill at the highest point in Melville, with stunning views across Melville and to the north as far as Sandton and on a clear day Pretoria. The garden is unusual in the sense that it is planted with mainly indigenous plants, except for the stunning Jacaranda tree which provides shade for most of the year. AccommodationThe Hillside House has four rooms all with internet access, TV’s with DSTV commercial bouquet (MNet, Movie Magic, Sport and some News channels) and coffee and tea facilities. All of the rooms have en-suite bath rooms. The RoomsRoom 1 A double East facing on the first floor with a Queen-size bed, en suite bath & shower. Room 2 North facing on the first floor a large room with either a King-size bed or 2 singles, en suite bath & shower Room 3 A single North facing room on the first floor, ¾ bed, en suite shower only. Room 4 An East facing room on the ground floor with a Queen-size bed, en suite bath & shower. Room 5 A self catering garden cottage with a King-size bed or 2 singles, en suite bath & shower, kitchenette. Room 6 (avaliable September 2009) Attached to the garden cottage (Room 5) on the ground floor with a Queen-size bed, en suite shower only. Room 7 (available September 2009) Attached to the garden cottage (Room 5) on the ground floor, Queen-size bed, en suite shower only FacilitiesDownstairs is where you get a real sense of contemporary loft design meets old Johannesburg charm as you take breakfast in the dining room, overlooking our indigenous garden. We also offer other meals on request and can point you towards a myriad of experiences, from live music to fine dining. Or you could stay in for the night and enjoy high-speed wireless Internet and satellite television in your room. LocationThe Hillside House provides secure off street parking for all guests and is within walking distance of a range of restaurants, shops, banks and postal services. It is ideal for the business traveller as it is close to all major highways with easy transport links to Johannesburg CBD, Sandton and Randburg. It is also close to the SABC, Milpark Hospital, Richmond (which hosts some of the major international TV News Channels) and is within waking distance of The University of Johannesburg. The Hillside House can arrange all transport requirements. Activities and AttractionsFor the tourist, there are a host of attractions such as the Melville Koppies, Emmarentia Botanical Gardens (offers sailing, canoeing, fishing, cycling, walking), Constitutional Hill, the Apartheid Museum and Nelson Mandela Bridge in close by Newtown, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, Johannesburg Zoo, Parkview Golf Course, Nelson Mandela Square and Gold Reef City.
