The Folie, which means “favourite abode” in modern French, is the inspired creation of Gowrie Farm developer Guy Smith, whose vision has seen the establishment of Gowrie Village, Gowrie Golf Course and Gowrie Farm Golf and Fly-Fishing Estate as the hub of an upmarket country lifestyle, central to the hub of the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. In conjunction with leading architects and designers, Guy has made The Folie the dream home-from-home for almost anyone needing to relax, to mend, to savour the area’s unspoiled spaces and sometimes-misty-sometimes-sunny days.

Accommodation

This newly created dream lodge comprises four en-suite double bedrooms, an open plan living area with kitchen leading seamlessly onto dining room, formal lounge and TV room, a private walled garden for braais and solitary relaxation - and views to inspire the whimsical artist in any of us.

Every luxury has been included, from under-floor heating and double-sided fireplaces to televisions in every bedroom (with king-sized, extra-length beds, sumptuous in crisp white percale linen), to deep baths and huge-headed showers in every bathroom.

The feel of The Folie is of space, of freedom to breathe, to expand and stretch, to grow. Light pours in through 360 degree glass walls, topped with raw wooden eaves and metal support structures that hint subtly of a barn and nod to the fertile farmlands that roll away for as far as the eye can see, with trout-filled dams on all sides and the surrounding lush greens of the golf course.

The balance between casual and plush echoes throughout the house, with raw wooden table tops a mirror of the wooden ceilings and the wooden doors that hide away the fridge and dishwasher, while crystal chandeliers glitter overhead and vibrantly-coloured fabrics and rich carpets stun the senses in the formal lounge area.

Facilities & service

The Folie is now available for self-catering guests wishing to experience its exquisite spaces. For those not wanting to lift a finger, chef and man-about-the-house Foreman is a welcome bonus. Choose from his carefully-created menus to savour the best of Midlands’ fresh fare, with all grocery shopping done for you, or bring your own for Foreman to weave his magic. He will also see to the laundry, cleaning, and even braaing, if lighting a fire seems just too much. And all the while, the only sound will be the gentle whistling of the breezes around the house.
