About Shumbalala Game Lodge

A journey for the soul and a feast for the senses ....

Shumbalala Game Lodge - where the African wild is spoiled only by the quiet appreciation of guests being waited upon in the true tradition of Africa in their luxurious surroundings. A safari experience in our unspoiled reserve is shared with an abundance of birds and wildlife as they roam the savannahs and riverine forests.

Shumbalala, rebuilt and refurbished and awarded 5 stars by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa, Big Five Country in the Heart of the 11000 ha Thornybush Game Reserve adjoining the Greater Kruger National Park.

‘Close encounters of a different kind’ are the kind of experiences that will linger in your memory long after your visit to Shumbalala. Cheetah, as well as Leopard, considered by many to be the most prized ‘sighting’, are often encountered.

Luxury Suites:
The setting was designed by nature - our staff provides the spirit – pure linen and soft fabric the comfort. Set under shady African trees lining the seasonal Monwana River, accommodation is in six luxury suites, all of which has overhead fans, air conditioning, open fireplaces, glass fronts and private viewing decks. The designer ‘picture window’ bathroom suites that includes both in-and-outside showers, was designed for the romantic at heart and is something to be experienced.

Presidential Suite:
In addition, there is a two-bedroomed Presidential Suite with its private dining facility, unique plunge pool and fireside facilities. Shumbalala’s boutique size ensures absolute exclusivity and privacy. Whether you select to spend the lazy afternoons at the pool, reading in our private library, selecting a prized African gift in our curio shop, bird watching or just relaxing …

Soft leather couches, warm fireside evenings in winter – a unique underground cellar in full view of the waterhole - come home to the welcome of our luxurious lodge after an uplifting experience in the bush, your senses inspired by all that is nature.

Savour sumptuous cuisine prepared by our expert chef taken either from the lodge decks positioned to ensure scenic vistas across the river bed or in more formal surroundings in the candle-lit dining room accompanied by a crackling fire in winter. Open air fire-side dinners are an occasion, and an opportunity to share your experiences……

Your qualified and experienced ranger and tracker are ever present - accompanying you on early morning and afternoon/evening game drive safaris in our specially built bush vehicles, even offering the choice of a canopy during inclement weather, and individual bucket seats.

Bush walks for the adventurous are a fascinating experience, as you discover the wonderful design of nature as each living creature, from the microscopic to the largest mammal lives in harmony with the trees and flora. Morning coffee and sundowners are enjoyed in the open veldt, often in close range of the wild life.

Leave with memories of close encounters with the Big Five and perhaps even the Cheetah and/or the elusive Wild Dog and those magnificent sunsets, beautiful surroundings, exquisite meals, friendly staff, to be sure ... you will be back.
